  • Reporting to the Director, Adult and Experiential Learning Center (AELC), the Advising Specialist supports the development of prior learning assessment (PLA) resources for Rowan students, faculty, and staff. In particular, the Advising Specialist conducts intake assessments for students interested in pursuing credit by exam, portfolio, and related opportunities for documenting credit for college-level learning. The Advising Specialist also maintains an advising caseload of students in 1-2 online and/or offsite programs and contributes to shaping the vision for PLA services across all Rowan Global degree completion programs. The Advising Specialist provides proactive, student-centered support and guidance for returning adults and nontraditional students and actively participates in the recruitment and retention efforts of the Division on behalf of his/her assigned program(s).


  • Assists with development and maintenance of workshops, manuals, and other resources to support students and faculty in exploring and/or implementing PLA.
  • Contributes to the design and delivery of training sessions for advisors and admissions staff to facilitate and support their role in the PLA process.
  • Creates, analyzes, and extracts data from existing reports regarding student enrollment to identify and provide outreach to potential PLA candidates.
  • Provides initial intake, including preliminary assessment of transfer credits and prior learning for students interested in exploring PLA opportunities.
  • Reviews and interprets test scores, unofficial transcripts, prior learning experiences, and workplace training/credentials to facilitate the development of individualized pathways to graduation for students in assigned advising caseload.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of degree program requirements and employment trends in assigned program(s).
  • Provides relevant academic and career advising and refers students to the appropriate University student support resources such as tutoring, testing, counseling, financial aid, etc., as needed.
  • Maintains detailed and accurate records of contact with students (Starfish, Banner, Excel, etc.).
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • One year of professional experience in a higher education environment working in student services, advising, or other related customer service field. A Master's degree in a related professional field is equivalent to one year of experience. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic advising and/or college-level teaching experience in an online setting
  • Experience working with adult and/or online students
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Canvas, Google apps
  • Knowledge of/background in construction trades and/or emergency management strongly preferred
  • Facility with Banner or other student information systems (e.g., Colleague)
  • Strong project management and organizational abilities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Ability to quickly grasp programmatic issues and offer creative, practical solutions
  • Deep commitment to developing pathways to certificate and/or degree completion for nontraditional learners
  • Flexibility and ability to attend to several projects at once in a fast-paced, self-directed environment


  • This part-time position is for up to twenty-five (25) hours per week and is not to exceed 944 hours per fiscal year. Work is contracted annually to coincide with the fiscal year and is contingent upon budget appropriations.
  • Position requires occasional evening and weekend activities and ability to travel as needed to other campuses/course delivery sites.

Pay Rate:

  • Commensurate with experience.

The report also contains information about fire statistics in Rowan University Residential Facilities and crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This information is required by federal law, Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or "Clery Act" and is provided by the Rowan University Department of Public Safety.
