Associate Controller

Under the direction of the AVP, the Associate Controller is responsible for effective management of all aspects of accounting and financial reporting for the institution. Responsibilities include coordinating all accounting functions of general ledger, long-term bonds, fixed assets, endowment funds, and cash management. The position is responsible for preparing the annual financial statements, and IPEDs. The position acts as the primary liaison with external and internal auditors, coordinator of the financial year end close, as well as, the annual external audit. The position participates in institution-wide initiatives, providing financial expertise to various levels of management in the organization.

This position requires a broad-based knowledge of all areas of accounting and financial reporting and responsibilities include:

  1. Provide leadership to accounting staff giving direction and guidance to direct reports, delegating assignments, reviewing staff productivity, and mentoring staff to ensure high quality accounting and financial reporting.
  2. Manages and coordinates the year end closing process and the preparation of the institution's annual financial statements including related footnotes and MD&A.
  3. Acts as primary liaison with external independent auditors on annual financial report.
  4. Develops and executes the vision for the accounting function, identifying process improvements.
  5. Maintains thorough working knowledge of the institution's financial management ERP system to ensure staff have the required knowledge needed for their area of responsibility.
  6. Responsible for accurate and timely posting of transactions to the general ledger while ensuring fiscal integrity with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and University policies and procedures.
  7. Reviews, maintains, and assists in developing effective internal control structures for all assigned functions.
  8. Primary liaison for all external financial reporting including the institution-wide IPEDS report.
  9. Advises the AVP  on financial, accounting and auditing matters.
  10. Responsible for writing and maintaining documentation of university accounting policies and procedures.
  11. Stays current and implements new pronouncements of accounting standards and other regulatory issues affecting accounting procedures, financial reporting, governmental funding, and audit issues.
  12. Deliver quality customer services to both internal and external constituents in a professional helpful and courteous manner.
  13. Other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or other business-related discipline is required.
  2. Five to seven years of professional accounting operations experience to include: General Ledger, Cash Management, Fixed Assets, Accounts Payable, and Financial Statement Preparation.
  3. Must be self-motivated and a highly detailed oriented problem solver with the ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  4. Must have an open and collaborative style of leadership that encourages teamwork and cooperation, and be a strong role model, manager and coach.
  5. Demonstrated ability to handle complex and multiple tasks in a professional and efficient manner.
  6. Strong organizational, oral, and written skills and attention to detail.

    Preferred Qualifications

  1. Candidate’s with a CPA or MBA  
  2. Knowledge of non-profit/governmental fund accounting
  3. Knowledge of GASB financial reporting requirements
  4. Prior experience in a higher education

The report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, public safety authority, crime reporting policies, fire safety, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about fire statistics in Rowan University Residential Facilities and crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This information is required by federal law, Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or "Clery Act" and is provided by the Rowan University Department of Public Safety.
