Ultrasound Instructor

The ultrasound instructor (USI) is responsible for the development and administration of a 4 year longitudinal curriculum dedicated to the fundamentals of Point of Care Ultrasound (POCUS) for osteopathic medical students.  The USI will serve as the primary instructor and evaluator of medical students through their required pre-clerkship and clerkship curriculum. They will assist students in developing their skills in order to develop basic proficiency in POCUS.  The USI will also be expected to contribute to the ongoing development and evaluation of the ultrasound curriculum including the overall curricular accreditation process. Additionally, the USI will assist with faculty development in the fundamentals of ultrasound where appropriate. The USI will work closely with the assistant dean of curriculum, the associate dean for assessment department and the assistant dean for clinical education in developing and assessing the outcomes of the medical students.


  • Perform diagnostic abdominal, obstetric, gynecologic, superficial, vascular ultrasound and / or cardiac ultrasound examinations.
  • Assess diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
  • Understand scientific publications on topics related to ultrasound imaging at the physician level.
  • Explain complex concepts involving anatomy, physiology, pathology, physics and image interpretation.
  • Propose and vet scholarly program in collaboration with the curriculum dean
  • Provides instruction and remediation for students.
  • Notify Academic Affairs in a timely manner of additional faculty needs to meet adequate faculty students ratios where applicable
  • Be available to answer students’ questions about the ultrasound curriculum
  • Create and update syllabi in RowanSOM approved format
  • Ensure each learning sessions/segment has appropriate content and level learning objectives
  • Ensure timely, organized maintenance of the Learning Management System (LMS) (BlackBoard) site and relevant materials
  • Maintain up to date mapping of learning objectives (course and classes) as designed by Academic Affairs
  • Create appropriate and diverse formative and summative assessments in collaboration with the assessment department
  • Collect, label, and map exam questions
  • Prepare and evaluate assignments
  • Ensure proctoring of exams
  • Prepare annual course review / self-evaluation as required by the Program Evaluation Student Assessment (PESA)
  • Prepare and finalize / sign off on student assessments and final grades
  • Ensure support for student learning through collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) and the creation of reviews where appropriate
  • Attend meetings relevant to the curriculum
  • Assist with faculty development as required by the assistant dean for curriculum
  • The USI shall maintain current knowledge of sonographic and/or other noninvasive diagnostic vascular techniques and educational methodology through continuing professional development.QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree and Certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).  The candidate must have a minimum of five (5) years of professional experience as a diagnostic medical sonographer, as well as two (2) years as an instructor.  The USI must have strong communication and organizational skills.  The ability to work well with a varied constituency (students, faculty, chairs, staff) is important.
