Phase Directors II

Rowan - School of Osteopathic Medicine


Phase directors oversee the development and administration of the medical school curriculum for their respective pre-clerkship year (year 1 or 2).  They serve as a resource and facilitator on campus for curriculum excellence. Phase directors implement the curricular plan according to the Curriculum Committee's recommendations and assist faculty in developing their instructional content to ensure the logical sequencing and integration of the curriculum.  Additionally, Phase directors work closely with the assessment division of Academic Affairs in developing and assessing the outcomes of the medical students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with faculty and the Curriculum Committee, propose and vet the medical school curriculum according to best practices
  • Provide the timely, organized creation and maintenance of administrative components of courses such as syllabi,  the Learning Management System (LMS) (BlackBoard) site and relevant materials
  • Encourage and foster collaboration between basic scientists and clinical faculty in support of a fully integrated curriculum
  • Ensure adequate and varied teaching methods to optimize student mastery of material
  • Create appropriate and diverse formative and summative assessments in collaboration with the assessment department
  • Chair the block exam review committee and attend every meeting
  • Ensure all exam items are tagged appropriately as per the assessment department’s guidelines
  • Work closely with the Block Director to compile representative block exams
  • Evaluate sessions and give constructive feedback to session teachers
  • Prepare and finalize student final grades for courses
  • Support student learning through collaboration with the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL)
  • Effectively communicate with stakeholders such as course directors, chairs, students and staff regarding the curriculum
  • Attend meetings relevant to the curriculum
  • Support the accreditation process



Phase directors will report to the assistant dean for curriculum and will be a key member of the curriculum staff.



The ideal candidate must have strong leadership skills and be able to lead curriculum and exam development. Applicants must be a PhD, DO, or MD with at least 5 years of medical education and administration experience, with some of that working in a medical school. Experience with course or clerkship direction is essential. The ability to work well with a varied constituency (students, faculty, chairs, and staff) is important, as is experience with negotiation. Faculty title will be assigned based on experience.

The report also contains information about fire statistics in Rowan University Residential Facilities and crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This information is required by federal law, Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or "Clery Act" and is provided by the Rowan University Department of Public Safety.
