Rowan University invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering. Rowan University is a comprehensive public institution that maintains three campuses in Glassboro, Camden, and Stratford, NJ. The University enrolls 20,000 students and supports 450 faculty that is focused on expanding its research and educational mission. A Carnegie 2 research university, Rowan maintains an emphasis on superior undergraduate education, and is consistently recognized as one of the fastest growing universities in the nation (4th in the recent annual rankings of the Chronicle of Higher Education). As the College of Engineering’s chief academic officer, the Dean will work closely with the Provost to enhance Rowan University’s distinctive identity as an entrepreneurial and innovative university and to help the University achieve Carnegie 1 research status. The Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering, founded in 1996 through a $100 million gift from Henry and Betty Rowan, is one of the twelve Colleges and Schools at Rowan University and has a dynamic, engaged and research active community. The dean is supported by a leadership team consisting of a vice dean, two associate deans, six department heads, an outreach director, and other support staff. Rowan Engineering hosts a student body of approximately 1,800 among its innovative Bachelor of Science degree programs in Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Engineering Entrepreneurship, and Mechanical Engineering as well as Master of Science, Master of Engineering Management and Ph.D. degree programs. The College has collaborated extensively with regional community college partners to establish transfer pathways, stackable credentialing opportunities, and bachelor’s degree completion opportunities. The College has continued to expand its campus footprint through roughly $80 million in capital projects since 2013 including the opening of a second academic building on the Glassboro campus in 2017, a full renovation of the College’s original academic building, development of a significant research presence at the South Jersey Technology Park, and partnership with the Health Sciences Center in Camden, New Jersey. Further growth is anticipated through continued and enhanced collaborations with the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and the School of Osteopathic Medicine at Rowan University. The College has a high quality undergraduate program (#21 out of more than 200 programs in our category, U.S. News and World Report 2020) with an expanding graduate program. The Engineering Clinic Program, a hallmark of the College’s undergraduate experience, incorporates industry sponsorships and emphasizes multidisciplinary experiences, teamwork, technical communication, project management, and continuous engineering applications throughout the four years.

Rowan’s main campus, and branch campuses are located within a 35 minute drive to Philadelphia, providing convenient access through the Northeast Corridor for national and international travel. New York City, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. are less than three hours away, and the New Jersey beaches are only an hour drive from the main campus. 

Position Requirements:

The Dean will have an excellent record of scholarship evidenced by external funding from prestigious agencies and a strong record of working with local, state and federal stakeholders. An earned doctorate in engineering or a related field is required, together with a successful track record in funded research and teaching that warrants a tenured faculty appointment at the rank of Full Professor. The Dean will have a demonstrated record of successfully promoting and advancing research and teaching, and at least five years of demonstrated managerial and leadership experience. The ideal candidate is an exceptional and inspirational leader that values transparency, honesty, and integrity.

As part of key responsibilities, the Dean will:

  • Drive academic planning and ensure the College maintains its standards of excellence with respect to the quality of curricula, teaching, and student performance;
  • Enhance the research environment and reputation of the College and University;
  • Demonstrate a proven capability for advancing a diverse, multicultural, and inclusive environment;
  • Grow the presence and reputation of the College’s research centers and institutes and represent the College as it seeks to further its partnerships with: government agencies and regional, national, and international business/industry.
  • Participate in fundraising, alumni engagement, and other activities that will grow the endowment/financial support for the college;
  • Have a thorough understanding of the higher education landscape in the 21st century and be ready to initiate changes that fundamentally enhance aspects of teaching and learning; and
  • Partner with and support the Provost to realize strategic goals.

The report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, public safety authority, crime reporting policies, fire safety, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about fire statistics in Rowan University Residential Facilities and crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This information is required by federal law, Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or "Clery Act" and is provided by the Rowan University Department of Public Safety.
