Under direction, performs technical laboratory procedures and analyses in support of specialized research activities of the laboratory. Oversees lower level technicians and support personnel. Assists in the design, set-up, and conducting of experiments as required. May work independently performing complex procedures and techniques. Participates in the teaching programs of the graduate school as it pertains to laboratory exercises in protein biochemistry, cell and molecular biology,

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Good general knowledge of biology and chemistry. Good communication, interpersonal organizational, math and analytical skills. Must be able to read and understand technical documents, operate scientific instruments and computers, perform detailed work and manage multiple tasks.

Experience in working with DNA, RNA and protein. Has a working knowledge of cell culture techniques including cell maintenance, cell stock freezing protocols, cell counting and related cell culture methodology. Has a basic understanding of molecular and cellular biology as well as basics in recombinant DNA technology.

Under broad guidance and direction, functions as the group leader and instructor for laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants, and students.

Provides professional-level laboratory technical support involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques.

Performs and oversees reagent preparation and maintenance in the laboratory. This includes general chemical and buffer preparation, bacterial culture media preparation, mammalian cell culture media preparation.

Has a working knowledge of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, pH meters, balances, electrophoresis equipment, and basic flow cytometry equipment.

May assign and instruct support personnel in various phases of technical analysis, experimentation and laboratory testing work, as may be required.

Maintains records, files and databases related to studies and experiments.

Keeps abreast of latest technology, methods and procedures related to research area

May be required to assist in data analysis and preparation of findings.

Desirable skills: mammalian cell culture, bacterial cell culture, DNA, RNA and protein electrophoresis, Southern, northern, western blot analysis, PCR.

Knowledge and handling of antibodies, restriction and related enzymes, DNA cloning.


Requires a bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline. A combination of two-years college level science curriculum plus two years laboratory technician or relevant laboratory research-study experience carrying out research protocols and tests may be substituted for the degree.  An additional equivalent amount of college-level study in appropriate science curriculum may take the place of the experience in the above combination.  Also requires knowledge of scientific empirical procedures.  Must understand the fundamentals of science; read and understand technical documents; perform complex scientific routines, protocols and tests; articulate data to researcher; give clear directions to others; and operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
