Summary/Position Description:

  • The Division of Facilities, Planning, and Operations at Rowan University (RU) is a growing enterprise.  The Division’s mission is to create and sustain a vibrant, safe, supportive environment at RU’s campuses.  The Division is dedicated to providing leadership in facilities development and management, campus planning, and business operations.  This division is led by the Vice President of Facilities, Planning, and Operations.
  • The Department of Facilities Operations is a part of the Division of Facilities, Planning and Operations.  Through collaboration and partnership with the rest of the Division of Facilities, Planning and Operations and campus community, this Department leads the overall management of facilities operations including Trades Staff, Central Plant Operations, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), and Custodial Operations.
  • One important component of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety is the Fire Safety division.  This group is responsible for general fire safety inspections of University properties, monitoring and maintaining fire suppression and detection systems and providing fire safety education programs to RU students and staff.
  • The Fire Safety Specialist (Professional Services Specialist 4, Administrative Services) works in EHS and reports to the Associate Director of Fire Safety (ADFS).  The position's primary responsibilities are to help ensure compliance with established fire safety codes and general practices, as well as to provide proactive fire safety public education programs. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initiates fire and general safety inspections, utilizing the State of New Jersey Uniform Fire Code as a guide. 
  • Documents fire safety violations found and communicates these violations to the appropriate University department personnel responsible for correcting same. 
  • Follows up with the appropriate University department representatives to ensure all violations have been corrected within an established period of time.
  • Schedules annual testing for all fire detection and suppression systems within the University system. 
  • Follows up with the appropriate contracted vendor on any fire detection and fire suppression related deficiencies. 
  • Collects, analyses and reports data about alarms and violations. Disseminates report to the ADFS.
  • Participates in public relations and public fire safety education programs to promote fire safety within the Rowan University community. 
  • Participates in the scheduling and execution of mandatory emergency evacuation drills, as required by the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code. 
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by ADFS or their designee.

Education Requirement:   

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, preferably in Fire Science, Fire Protection and Engineering, Emergency Management, Public Administration, or closely related field. 

Required Experience:

  • One (1) or more year(s) of professional-level work experience in one/more of the following functional areas:
    • Fire Safety communication and/or training
    • Fire Safety regulatory compliance and permitting process
    • Inspections involving State of New Jersey Uniform Fire Code (or related)

Preferred work experience and/or qualifications (in Higher Education or related is preferred):

  • Ability to work in a self-directed manner, involving multiple stakeholders, and provide oversight in the areas related to fire safety.
  • Ability to effectively interact with a wide variety of customers; undergraduate students to faculty to University level committees, etc.
  • Ability to develop and present fire safety public education programs. Excellent verbal communication and written skills.
  • Familiarity with a variety of fire alarm technologies and systems
  • Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Suite products: Word, Excel and Power Point at a minimum.
  • Current valid NJ state motor vehicle operator’s license (or appropriate valid license for the state in which they reside.)
  • New Jersey Fire Inspector Certification or related
  • NJ Firefighter 1 Certification or related
  • Certified Fire Instructor Level I or related
  • Incident Management Level I or related

The report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, public safety authority, crime reporting policies, fire safety, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about fire statistics in Rowan University Residential Facilities and crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This information is required by federal law, Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or "Clery Act" and is provided by the Rowan University Department of Public Safety.
