Director of Student Diversity


This is an exciting opportunity for someone to establish the Office of Diversity at Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (RowanSOM). The Director will serve as a liaison between students and administration regarding their needs to maintain a culture that is inclusive, respectful and in keeping with our Mission.

RowanSOM received its first Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) Grant in 2018 for $3 million over 5 years dedicated to recruit and retain underprivileged students in the health careers pipeline. The Director of Student Diversity will play a major role in the administration of this grant program, which includes the supervision of 3 positions funded by the grant in the Diversity team, as well as interfacing with other positions within the school.

Working with the offices of Faculty Affairs and Admissions, the Director of Student Diversity will provide guidance on recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty, staff and students, in keeping with our Mission. This position will report directly to the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, and work closely with the Senior Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Rowan University in Glassboro for cohesion between campuses. The Director will also work closely with the Assistant Dean for Curriculum, advising on educational programming for cultural competency, social determinants of health and health disparities.


  • Establish an Office of Diversity
  • Directs and supervises any task force or committee on diversity at RowanSOM
  • Serves as a resource to the Dean for the  advancement  of the schools mission and commitment to diversity
  • Counsels students and serves as a mentor to student groups related to diversity
  • Create a common vision for an inclusive climate at RowanSOM and outline steps to realize the vision including the identification of benchmarks to measure progress
  • Serve as a champion, and guide the school on matters of equity, inclusion and diversity.
  • Develop workshops, presentations, learning modules and other strategies that promote diversity, equity and inclusion resulting in an environment of understanding both towards diversity of patients and towards colleagues
  • Meet with search and admissions committees for students, residents, staff and faculty in order to disseminate guidelines and procedures that preserve the integrity of the search process in keeping with the school’s Mission, and to provide resources for advertising, or to explain expectations for future contacts
  • Develop appropriate reports about campus issues related to diversity to apprise the medical school’s leadership and the University’s Assistant Vice President of Equity and Diversity
  • Write and manage grants acquired for advancing the diversity mission of the school
  • Serve on the Admissions Committee
  • Supervise members of the Diversity Team
  • Supervise some student research on health disparities topics


Effective conflict resolution skills and the ability to find mutually acceptable solutions to difficult problems. Able to build consensus, find support and reconcile competing interests.  Strong communication skills (verbal and written). Must be approachable and generate and cultivate a comfortable atmosphere with students.


Master’s degree in related field (For example, but not limited to Sociology, Human Services, HR management, Social Work, Social Justice) with 5 years of higher education administration experience. Doctorate level education preferred. Grant-writing and grant administration experience are required. Leadership experience with direct supervision of individuals. Experience in medical education is preferred, as is two years of experience as a diversity officer or other similar title. Faculty appointment available depending on level of education, experience and scholarly work.

The report contains information regarding campus security and personal safety including topics such as: crime prevention, public safety authority, crime reporting policies, fire safety, disciplinary procedures and other matters of importance related to security on campus. The report also contains information about fire statistics in Rowan University Residential Facilities and crime statistics for the three previous calendar years concerning reported crimes that occurred on campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus. This information is required by federal law, Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or "Clery Act" and is provided by the Rowan University Department of Public Safety.
