Rowan University is subject to the residency requirements of the NJ First Act (N.J.S.A. 52:14-7, P.L. 2011, Chapter 70). Any person hired to a non-exempt position shall either have their principal residence in New Jersey or have one (1) year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Part-Time, Hourly Operations Supervisor (Campus Recreation Facilities)

Position Summary:

The part-time, hourly Operations Supervisor will be responsible for supporting the mission statement of Campus Recreation to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for students and members.  The position will support maintaining cleanliness, providing customer service, and enforcing policies. This leadership position will supervise various front-line student and part-time staff in their areas of responsibility, while supporting and assisting the maintenance and professional staff. 

Essential Functions/Percentage of Time Spent on Each:

Facility and Risk Management - 40%

  • Proactively assess and take necessary action where risk and safety may be compromised for participants and staff
  • Manage access of all individuals in the building for safety and security purposes
  • Performs assigned cleaning duties based on customer needs, cleaning priorities and proper disinfection guidelines
  • Input and follow up on facility work orders proactively when areas of the building are not functioning properly
  • Coordinate and communicate with contractors and university facilities staff for ongoing maintenance, projects, and inspections
  • General cleaning and maintenance of various indoor and outdoor facilities
  • Provide preventative maintenance of cleaning equipment
  • Troubleshoot, perform minor repairs and report fitness and sports equipment not properly functioning
  • Organize and inventory of storage areas
  • Provide and check-in return of equipment rentals for organizations/groups

Staff Management - 30%

  • Confirm and manage shifts of front line area student staff supporting informal recreation including aquatics, facilities, fitness area, main office, and program monitors
  • Develop a level of competency to cover front line areas as needed  
  • Mentor and support staff during challenging situations of conflict resolution and problem solving
  • Troubleshoot staff situations for absent or late employees, while supervising the area to maintain customer service standards
  • Coordinate proper clock-in and clock-out of front line staff
  • Document through shift reports any staff highlights/positive reinforcement and disciplinary issues to the direct supervisor of the area
  • Create and support a team environment where all staff members feel valued


Customer Service - 15%

  • Exemplify service excellence through positive interactions with participants
  • Diffuse situations where participants may disagree with policies, guidelines, or interruptions
  • Communicate with participants any situations that may hinder their ability to access or participate in an activity
  • Document any situations that would need follow up by the professional staff or graduate coordinators to provide participants with clarity or answers to specific questions
  • Have a baseline knowledge of all departmental program and service offerings
  • Be knowledgeable to provide or find information to answer questions regarding other university facilities, programs, and services

Departmental Responsibilities - 15%

  • Responsible for set-up and breakdown for events and rentals
  • Responsible for set-up and breakdown of informal recreation equipment
  • Attend building manager area trainings and meetings
  • Participate in one on one employee self-assessment meetings
  • Attend mandatory Campus Recreation All-Staff Trainings and Real World Connections
  • Obtain American Red Cross CPR certification

Specific Skills

  • Continued participation in appropriate in-service and training sessions
  • Awareness of safety concerns and risk management
