Rowan University is subject to the residency requirements of the NJ First Act (N.J.S.A. 52:14-7, P.L. 2011, Chapter 70). Position Title: Assistant Director/Counselor, AFT 24

Functional Area of Responsibility:  ASCEND, Center for Access, Persistence & Achievement

Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President,  Student Success & Inclusion Programs, the Assistant Director/Counselor of the ASCEND program on the Camden Campus is a critical team member, who provides a range of student success services, support and academic, financial, personal, and career counseling to students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides academic and personal counseling to  a caseload of students, as they clarify and pursue academic, professional, and personal goals, directly and via connecting them with University resources such as the Office of Career Advancement, academic advising, experiential education opportunities, first generation and/or Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and affordability resources, etc.
  • Plan and implement approved seminars and workshops aimed at promoting student's academic achievement and personal growth.
  • Provides appropriate referrals and interventions to assist in building resiliency assets for ASCEND students.
  • Monitors all students concerns, employing effective counseling strategies to promote academic achievement, enhanced performance and reduce student attrition; documents services rendered to students.
  • Maintains consistent and confidential records of student data at the individual and program level, with a focus on equitable outcomes and access to University resources and opportunities.
  • Renders a comprehensive network of counseling activities that relate directly to the unique needs of the student population.
  • Makes student referrals to appropriate university offices and outside agencies.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the Pre-College Summer Bridge Program.
  • Coordinates summer program student staff hiring and training process. Provides supervision to student staff.
  • Monitors academic progress of caseload and identifies students not making satisfactory progress, provides interventions and strategies and resources to students at risk.
  • Work closely with all offices and departments at the university and specifically within the Division of Student Affairs, Diversity Equity & Inclusion, the Office of Financial Aid and academic departments.
  • Coordinates tutoring and success coaching services for students.
  • Provides assistance to students and parents in completing financial aid forms and navigating the financial aid process.
  • Remains informed of all academic policies of the university and student success strategies that further the mission of ASCEND.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all types of financial aid available to students, and the rules and regulations governing aid policies.
  • Participates in workshops, conferences, and training sessions which will aid in meeting job duties and improving support services to students.
  • Participates and attends university and student events on campus.
  • Collects, analyzes maintains data for annual reports.
  • Coordinates activities related to the EOF transfer process.
  • Assist with Open Houses, Accepted Student Receptions, Orientations, and other recruitment activities as needed.
  • Position may require some evening and weekend activities.
  • Any other related duties as directed by the Program Director.



  • Required Education: Master’s Degree in counseling, educational administration, student personnel, or related area.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience. 
  • Demonstrated excellent communication, organizational, and student service skills
  • Demonstrated background in helping meet the needs of students from historically underrepresented groups based on race, ethnicity, income status, first generation status, disability status, etc.
  • Demonstrated high-level interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills, with demonstrated ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters
  • Experience preferred in coaching, opportunity and access programs,  mentoring programs, academic advising, a college learning center, and/or counseling
  • Experience preferred in designing and facilitating academic skill-focused workshops for college students
