Under direction does the field and office work involved in the inspection within a designated area to enforce and insure compliance with public safety and health regulations as required by various safety statutes; inspects work areas to eliminate hazardous conditions and to insure that employees are adhering to safety regulations; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF WORK:

  • Responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance and minor repairs of the University’s fire/life safety equipment and systems.  Primary systems include all automatic fire suppression systems (wet/dry/other) and emergency generators. 
  • Responsible for maintaining clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing and maintenance (corrective and/or preventative) for said designated fire/life safety equipment and systems. 
  • Obtains quotes for repair and responsible for scheduling repairs with contracted vendors and assisting same as needed.
  • Schedules annual/quarterly testing for all fire suppression systems and emergency generators and assists contracted vendors with same. 
  • Follows up with contracted vendors on any fire suppression systems and emergency generator related deficiencies. 
  • Ability to enter, receive and evaluate work orders, investigate same and troubleshoot problems where appropriate or coordinates repairs with contracted vendors. 
  • Assists with the preparation and issuance of hot work/burn permits.
  • Responds to emergency situations during or after hours for the purposes of resolving immediate fire/life safety equipment and systems issues. 
  • Participates in public relations and public fire safety education programs to promote fire safety within the Rowan University community. 
  • Participates in the scheduling and execution of mandatory emergency evacuation drills, as required by the New Jersey Uniform Fire Code. 
  • Performs additional duties as assigned by ADFS or their designee.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Position will require regular exposure to walking, standing, bending, climbing stairs/ladders, and lifting (not to exceed 50 pounds).  Position will be required to wear provided protective clothing/equipment when needed to ensure safe working conditions (hearing protection, respiratory protection, etc.).  While primary duty hours are day shift, applicant must be flexible to work after hours, weekends or holidays in the event of emergencies or other operational needs.  Applicant shall be required to provide a means to be contacted during non-duty hours for emergencies (partial cell phone reimbursement may be available as per university policy). 

REQUIREMENTS:

EXPERIENCE:

Four (4) years of experience in the construction, repair, or inspection of buildings and/or mechanical equipment in the industrial, mercantile, manufacturing, or recreational industry.

One (1) or more year(s) of professional work experience in one/more of the following preferred:

  • Operation, inspection and maintenance of fire suppression and life safety systems.
  • Inspections involving State of New Jersey Uniform Fire Code (or related)

NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required experience may substitute college credits on    the basis of (30) semester hours for each year of experience up to a maximum of two (2) years.  The semester hour credits will be limited to: mathematics, sciences, engineering subjects, and/or statistics.

LICENSE:

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's licenses valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of the methods useful in testing fire alarm and signal system, elevators, hoists, machinery safeguards, buildings, construction sites, and businesses for safety and compliance with law.
  • Knowledge of elementary safety and industrial concepts terminology, tools, devices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the present-day business and industrial activities in New Jersey and of the public and worker health and safety hazards.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with the firefighting equipment required by laws of New Jersey and their proper installation servicing, and operation.
  • Knowledge of the procedures likely to be most effective in the inspection of places covered by the various safety statutes.
  • Knowledge of state and national codes, including but not limited to the New Jersey State fire code and NFPA codes.
  • Ability to interpret the laws of New Jersey pertaining to the protection of the health and safety of the public.
  • Ability to conduct inspections and investigations.
  • Ability to compute simple mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to organize assigned field safety inspection work and develop effective work methods.
  • Ability to enforce the rules and regulations and establish rapport with those subject to these rules and regulations.
  • Ability to conduct the required extensive field visits, inspections, and tests.
  • Ability to take and maintain a firm stand when differences of opinion and interpretation arise.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
  • Ability to recognize actual and potentially dangerous conditions hazardous to the health and safety of the public.
  • Ability to make special investigations as may be required.
  • Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate and informative written reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Ability to maintain the essential records and files.
  • Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or
  • manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.  American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
  • Ability to work independently or with minimal supervision. 
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to operate assigned University owned vehicles.
  • Ability to assist with required state fire inspections, fire extinguisher maintenance/checks and emergency lighting maintenance/checks as needed. 
  • Demonstrated skill with Microsoft Suite products, at a minimum, Word and Excel.
