Position Summary: 

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine (SSVM) is seeking a dynamic and visionary leader for the position of Department Head, Veterinary Biomedical Sciences. Reporting to the Dean of Veterinary Medicine, the successful applicant will work alongside talented faculty, promote collaboration across disciplines, and help drive the department's continued success in both academic and research excellence.

This role presents an exceptional opportunity to lead a critical department that plays a pivotal role in advancing veterinary research, education, and service. The ideal candidate will possess a strategic vision for the department and be committed to supporting faculty, staff, and students to achieve their highest potential.

About the Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences

The Department of Veterinary Biomedical Sciences serves as the academic home of the basic science faculty at the SSVM. Home to a diverse and growing group of faculty members, the department drives excellence in teaching, research, and service across a broad range of disciplines including Anatomy, Physiology, Immunology, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, Bacteriology, Virology, Parasitology, Epidemiology, and Infectious Diseases.

Our faculty are deeply committed to advancing the educational mission of the university, providing critical instruction and mentorship to veterinary students while fostering innovative research that contributes to the global veterinary and biomedical fields. The department's interdisciplinary expertise supports a strong foundation in veterinary medicine, positioning it as an essential pillar of the school’s mission to deliver cutting-edge education and research.

As Department Head, the successful applicant will lead a department that plays a crucial role in shaping the future of veterinary education and biomedical research.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  

Leadership & Strategic Vision:

  • Provide dynamic, inclusive, and forward-thinking leadership for the department.
  • Develop and implement strategic goals in alignment with the school’s mission and long-term objectives.
  • Advocate for the department’s priorities and needs to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Promote an environment of collaboration, academic excellence, and innovation.

Departmental Administration:

  • Oversee day-to-day operations, including managing the department’s budget, faculty, and staff resources.
  • Lead faculty recruitment, evaluation, and retention efforts.
  • Foster faculty professional development through mentoring, evaluations, and tenure processes.
  • Ensure efficient faculty workload distribution and optimize teaching assignments.
  • Develop and manage the departmental budget.

Academic Leadership & Curriculum Development:

  • Guide the development, implementation, and evaluation of high-quality DVM curricula.
  • Lead periodic curriculum reviews, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards and evolving student needs.
  • Teach veterinary biomedical sciences courses and mentor students in academic pursuit.

Faculty Development & Recruitment:

  • Hire, mentor, and evaluate faculty, fostering a culture of professional growth and academic success.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in faculty recruitment, retention, and development efforts.
  • Facilitate faculty success through targeted professional development and leadership opportunities.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree (DVM, Ph.D., or equivalent) in a biomedical-related field.
  • Eligibility for appointment as a full professor; evidence of a distinguished record of teaching, research, and service.
  • Proven leadership abilities, including experience managing budgets, faculty development, and departmental resources.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Experience with accreditation processes, curricular development, and faculty management, evaluation, promotion, and tenure processes.
  • Experience working collaboratively with senior leadership to implement institutional missions and visions.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous leadership and managerial experience in a DVM program or related field.
  • Significant experience in academic leadership, faculty mentoring, and interdisciplinary program development.
  • A strong vision for advancing veterinary biomedical sciences in a rapidly evolving academic landscape.

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the Glassboro, New Jersey west campus, 22 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine plans to admit its first class of DVM students in 2025, pending accreditation approval. Facilities will include an academic teaching facility aimed at the delivery of pre-clinical training, a small animal teaching hospital, and a research facility.
