Position Summary:    
The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University (SSVM) is seeking skilled Diagnostic Imaging Veterinary Assistants and Technicians to join our new veterinary program and teaching hospital. The hospital is located 1.5 miles from our main Glassboro campus. 
SSVM is a new and innovative veterinary teaching hospital for small animals, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment. The teaching hospital is designed to accommodate multiple specialty departments, including anesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, dentistry and oral surgery, diagnostic imaging, emergency/critical care, exotics, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, primary care, and surgery. 
Key Responsibilities for this Role: 
  • Perform digital radiographs and assist with running advanced imaging modalities such as Ultrasound, CT and MRI procedures under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. 
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and proper use of radiographic equipment in regard to collimation, MA, Time and KVP. 
  • Demonstrate the basic knowledge of radiation physics with the ability to teach Veterinary Students the basic principles. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Radiology Information System (RIS) for patient examination ordering, client charges, reporting, scheduling and patient flow through the Diagnostic Service. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) for storage of all Diagnostic Imaging Studies. 
  • Prepare and position small animals and exotic animals for imaging using safe restraint techniques. 
  • Administer sedation and monitor patients during procedures. 
  • Demonstrate the ability to produce quality imaging in an advanced imaging modality with a high level of understanding of the basic operations of that equipment. 
  • Operate and maintain imaging equipment; troubleshoot issues as needed. 
  • Assist with fluoroscopic procedures (e.g., dynamic trachea evaluations, barium studies, myelograms, cystograms, and urethrograms). 
  • Maintain accurate records. 
  • Enforce and demonstrate radiation safety protocols and proper shielding with lead attire and monitoring with film badges. 
  • Train and mentor staff under the guidance of the radiologist. 
  • Collaborate with veterinarians and technicians to ensure efficient workflow and patient care.

Reporting Structure: 
The Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians will report directly to the Veterinary Technician Manager. 
Required Qualifications & Salary Information: 
The starting rate for each level is equivalent to the probationary rate listed below based on the collective bargaining unit guidelines. After completion of a six-month probationary period, the employee's pay can increase to the “Job Rate” for that position. Depending on experience, the candidate may be hired at the "Job Rate" to start. 
Veterinary Technicians (Credentialed, evidence of passing the VTNE) 
  • Level 1 
    • Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) certification eligible or achieved, or equivalent specialty-level expertise 
    • Minimum 5 years clinical experience 
      • Probationary Rate: $29.38/hour 
      • Job Rate: $30.02/hours 
      • Max Rate: $30.68/hour 
  • Level 2 
    • Minimum 5 years clinical experience 
      • Probationary Rate: $26.05/hour 
      • Job Rate: $26.68/hour 
      • Max Rate: $27.36/hour 
Veterinary Assistants (Non-Credentialed) 
  • Level 1 
    • Associate degree or higher 
    • Minimum 5 years clinical experience 
      • Probationary Rate: $22.73/hour 
      • Job Rate: $23.36 
      • Max Rate: $24.02/hour 
*Hourly rates reflect each position’s pay post 7/1/25 per the collective bargaining agreement. 
*Employees must have 4+ years of applicable experience to be hired above the probationary rate per the collective bargaining agreement. 
 
Experience & Skills Requirements: 
  • Has a minimum of 2 years’ experience as an imaging or radiology veterinary technician 
  • Has previous experience running advanced diagnostic imaging machines (MRI/CT/Digital Radiography, etc.) 
  • Experience with radiographic principles (collimation, MA, KVP, exposure time). 
  • Knowledge of contrast agents, contraindications, and side effects. 
  • Understands medical terminology, medications, calculations, and common procedures. 
  • Available for future on-call rotation (required) 
  • Strong communication, organizational, and teaching skills. 
  • Adaptable to a fast-growing and developing workplace. 
 
Preferred Qualifications: 
  • CVT/LVT/RVT (active license) 
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities (judgment, logic, creativity, conflict resolution) 
  • Strong attention to detail 
  • Able to observe the behavior and condition of animals 
  • Proficient with anesthesia and anesthetic patient monitoring of ASA I-III (preferred experience with ASA I-V) 
  • Familiarity with the use of ventilators 
  • Willing to work flexible hours and weekends as needed. 
  • Previous experience working in a teaching environment. 
  • Excellence in developing interpersonal skills in relation to co-workers, clinicians, students, staff, and clients. 
Working Conditions 
  • Hazards 
    • Veterinary workers may be exposed to hazards like slips, trips, and falls. They may also be exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and animal feces and urine. When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, veterinary workers risk being bitten, kicked, or scratched. 
    • Veterinary workers may be exposed to hazards like bloodborne pathogens, hazardous drugs, radiation, toxic waste, and chemical hazards such as disinfectants, pesticides, and latex.  
  • Animals 
    • The types of animals treated at a veterinary hospital can affect the working conditions. Our teaching hospital may consist, but is not limited to, the following types of animals: small mammals, large mammals, livestock, reptiles, avians, and other exotic animals.

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine is located on the Glassboro, New Jersey west campus, 22 miles southeast of Philadelphia. The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine admitted its first class of DVM students in September of 2025 and the Teaching Hospital opened it’s doors to the public in October. Facilities include an academic teaching facility aimed at the delivery of pre-clinical training, a small animal teaching hospital, and a research facility.
