Summary

The College of Communication and Creative Arts at Rowan University seeks a dedicated, experienced professional to serve as Director of the Center for Sports Communication and Social Impact (https://ccca.rowan.edu/sportscommcenter/index.html).

The Center works to increase the visibility of and support the recently launched Sports Communication and Media academic programs, which include a major, minor and certificate of undergraduate study. The Bachelor’s degree, launched this year, already has over 125 majors. The Center Director reports to the Dean of the College of Communication and Creative Arts.

The Center Director will bring a student-centered approach and experiences (through teaching, mentoring, advising, coaching, etc.), strong networking experience and abilities, and a demonstrated dedication to social impact, diversity and inclusion. Further, the Center Director will cultivate liaisons with local/regional market sports media and communication outlets and local/regional market sports teams that promote and support student success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Social Impact Facilitation/Engagement

  • Demonstrate experience in and dedication to promoting diversity, inclusion and/or social justice causes through the Center and Sports Communication and Media
  • House and promote We Are One Team (WA1T), a first-of-its-kind interdisciplinary and interdepartmental initiative to promote diversity and inclusion through sport on U.S. college campuses. WA1T creates awareness of social injustice by highlighting and empowering marginalized voices in the sporting community and promotes environments that create advocates for positive sports-related social change. The organization is currently housed here (https://www.bgsu.edu/bgsucares/WeAreOneTeam-BG.html) and will be moving to Rowan this fall.
  • Create opportunities for underrepresented groups in sports communication and media (networking, mentorship, etc.)

Internships/Student Development

  • Facilitate establishment of Sports CaM internships at Rowan, across the Delaware Valley and the northeastern United States, and beyond, where possible.
  • Serve as a professional mentor for Sports Communication and Media students throughout their Rowan lifecycle, from pre-freshmen to alumni. This involves regularly meeting with students on a one-on-one basis to develop trajectories for their career development.
  • Connect students with decision makers at jobs in sports communication and media that appropriately match students interests and abilities.

Internal/Collaboration

  • Collaborate with Sports Communication and Media faculty in creating experiential learning opportunities for students related to sports communication and social impact (e.g., service learning projects, research projects, etc.)
  • Create and foster partnerships across campus that enhance/advance the mission of the Center (e.g., student organizations, centers, departments, etc.)
  • Oversee interns working within the Center for Sports Communication and Social Influence.

External/Events

  • Continue to grow the Center’s weekly speaker series Pizza with the Pros. This involves planning and booking at least 10 speakers per semester to participate in weekly student roundtables about contemporary careers and issues in sports communication and media.
  • Effectively initiate, plan, coordinate and publicize the Center’s fall and spring events across the university and local/regional community. This involves booking at least two nationally recognized speakers per year from the world of sports who will provide the events’ keynotes and/or Q&A sessions.
  • Ability to represent the College and University in fundraising efforts.

Additionally desirable

  • Teach one class per semester in sports communication and media
  • Maintain strong media profile, if already exists

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s or terminal degree preferred

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum three years’ demonstrated experience working with students or young adults through teaching, mentoring, advising, coaching, etc.
  • Leadership position within sports communication and media or related fields
  • Already existing strong sports communication and media network within the region
