Overview
The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University (SSVM) is seeking applicants for its Director of Veterinary Medical Services position. The Director will be tasked with providing oversight and leadership for the on-campus multi-specialty small animal teaching hospital as well as other community-facing clinical operations.

 

Position

Reporting to the Dean, the Director will be responsible for planning, budgeting, hiring, and implementation of administrative, technical, and operational functions of the facility. As a teaching hospital, the Director must be cognizant of the importance of both quality service to clients and patients as well as focusing on the provision of educational opportunities for veterinary and veterinary technology students.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides sustainable leadership to the entire hospital team that builds a positive culture of collaborative learning.
  • Administrative oversight of hospital operations to support the service, teaching, and research missions of the SSVM.
  • Refinement, implementation, and management of an operational budget for the hospital facility which includes equipment, staffing needs, and inventory.
  • Participate in planning meetings related to relevant policy and procedure updates, pricing changes and human resource issues.
  • Development and implementation of hiring plans for facility staff to ensure adequate coverage of shifts and fulfillment of hospital services.
  • Management of hospital employees, including administrative and technical staff.
  • Development of polices and processes for the teaching hospital.
  • Overall responsibility for cost management and operational revenue generation, ensuring balance with the teaching mission of the facility.
  • Coordination and facilitation of communication and collaboration between clinical departments including staff, faculty, and administrators.
  • Oversee all external relations, including client communications and collaborating with the SSVM Public Relations and Communications Manager to ensure successful marketing campaigns.
  • Collaborate with SSVM administration, faculty, and staff to integrate teaching and research missions into the hospital operations through effective communication and appropriate policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Serve as the main point of contact for major issues related directly to hospital operations.
  • Address staff and client concerns and grievances.
  • Perform any additional responsibilities and duties as required and requested by the school and university leadership.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in business, finance, healthcare administration, management, or a related field is considered a minimum requirement.  A master’s degree or above (MBA, MHA, etc.) and advanced training and/or credentials in healthcare business management (CVPM, etc.) is strongly preferred.
  • A demonstrated understanding of veterinary medicine and veterinary medical facility operations management. Education/training such as a DVM degree or a CVT/LVT/RVT credential would be helpful in demonstrating this expertise, however this is a non-clinical role and these are not required.  Priority will be given to candidates with the appropriate business/management experience over those with veterinary credentials.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in an upper-level administrative position in a multi-specialty veterinary or human healthcare facility.
  • Ability to accommodate a flexible schedule, including responding promptly to any urgent after-hours issues that may arise.
  • Adept at collaborating and communicating with a diverse population of clients, students, and colleagues.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities simultaneously.
  • A strong focus on customer service, both relating to clients and students within the educational program.
  • Familiarity with veterinary electronic medical records systems, specifically EzyVet, preferred.
  • Ability to remain professional in all situations and maintain confidentiality with employee, student, and client information.
