Veterinary Technician (I-III), Shelter Medicine and Community Engagement, School of Veterinary Medicine  

The School of Veterinary Medicine at Rowan University is seeking a motivated and progressive veterinary technician dedicated to serving both the Rowan University School of Veterinary Medicine and the community through our shelter medicine and community outreach program. In this position, which includes service on our new mobile surgical unit, at the Gloucester County Animal Shelter spay and neuter clinic, and other elements of our shelter medicine and community outreach program, the selected candidate(s) will assist with the care, treatment, and surgical procedures of animals under the supervision of the veterinarians on the service.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

The Shelter Medicine Veterinary Technician’s essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

• Responsible for patient surgical prep, assisting doctors in surgery, catheter placement, intubation, anesthesia monitoring, post-surgical patient monitoring, medication injection and blood draws, collection and analysis of test specimens, as well as data collection and accurate record keeping.
• Adheres to protocols for animal care, kennel maintenance, sanitation, parasite and disease control, and other animal care practices within established policies and guidelines.
• Must continually and consistently maintain a humane and caring attitude toward the animals in their care.
• Proper handling and restraint of animals.
• Responsible for careful observation of animals throughout the day, to ensure that the animals are safe and healthy.
• Responsible for promptly notifying the Clinic Manager and/or Veterinarian if any animal shows signs of stress, injury, or illness.
• Responsible for prompt and proper receiving and kenneling of new animals brought into the veterinary clinic. These duties include, but are not limited to: examining the animal and reporting any injuries, abnormalities, or signs of illness to management, fitting the animal with a collar ID Tag, verifying needed vaccination or disease testing including fecal, heartworm and FeLV/ FIV. Checking the animal for any evidence of fleas and/or ticks and administering, or applying, age appropriate preventative, placing the animal in a clean cage/run with fresh bedding, food and water as appropriate and proper identification and information on the kennel or cage door.
• Responsible for maintaining health services: adhering to all clinic protocols, parasite screens, medical treatments, etc. and accurate record keeping at all times including entry into designated medical management software, drug logs and animal medical records as well as ensuring timely accurate documentation.
• Working with veterinary and veterinary technology students assigned to the service.
• Performs other duties as assigned. This includes but is not limited to: answering phone calls and responding to emails that may arise, scheduling surgical and medical patients, transporting animals, as needed.

The selected candidate(s) must possess the following: 

• Completion of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited veterinary technology program, preferred.
• At least 2 years of job experience as a veterinary technician.
• Previous experience in a shelter and/or high volume spay/neuter, highly preferred.
• Available to work flexible hours, including weekends and holiday shifts, mobile practice as needed.
• Must be flexible and adaptable.
• Ability to work cordially, safely, and efficiently in face-paced, stressful conditions.
• Ability to cope with loss of animal life from illness, injury, and euthanasia.
• Ability to safely and humanely handle animals.
• Understanding of the unique focus of shelter practice as compared to general private practice veterinary medicine.

Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
