The Department of Geriatrics & Gerontology, New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging (NJISA), Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine at Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences of Rowan University is seeking a full-time faculty member to work on Grants and Special Projects within the institute.  This is a non-clinical faculty position.

This is a high level academic faculty position for an experienced health care professional with academic, teaching, inter-professional education, administrative, research, and leadership experience. The right candidate will work with multiple health care disciplines in a medical school/academic health center environment with a dynamic statewide center of excellence in aging with a 3-part mission of clinical service, education, and research.

In collaboration with the Director of the New Jersey Institute for Successful Aging (NJISA)/Chair of the Department of Geriatrics & Gerontology and the NJISA Co-Director, this position will support an inter-professional team-based approach to quality care and further the continued growth and development of the Institute/Department through grants, special projects, aging-related research, and  achievement of NJISA’s clinical, education, and research mission consistent with the responsibilities of the medical school faculty.

Duties:

  1. Teaches/precepts medical students, residents, fellows, and other health professions disciplines to create a workforce prepared to provide evidence-based inter-professional geriatric care to older individuals that includes a focus on the 4Ms (What Matters, Medications, Mentation [Mind], and Mobility) framework, age-friendly and dementia-capable care.
  2. Collaborates with departmental leadership on strategic plans for the continued expansion of the Institute/Department through engagement in special projects and seeking extramural funding to support education, research and clinical service.
  3. Develops programming, marketing and supporting materials, curriculum, policies and procedures to build infrastructure and support strategic initiatives, grants, research, and special projects undertaken by NJISA, the department, key stakeholders, and Virtua Health College of Medicine & Life Sciences of Rowan University.
  4. Networks with representatives from the public and private sectors, including but not limited to federal, state, and local government; academia; professional, community, and faith-based organizations; and funding agencies to support the School/Institute/Department’s mission and advance its goals of clinical service, education, and research.
  5. Works with the leadership team to identify and develop partnerships at national, state, and local levels to advance the mission/goals of the NJISA and the Department and support service to the community.
  6. Conducts surveys and needs assessments to support rationale for grants and special projects; gathers data/feedback on initiatives and produces reports and related documents, abstracts or articles to disseminate training/education and related research findings that address the needs of the department, the school, special projects, funding agencies, and partners/stakeholder groups.
  7. Participates in the formulation/revision of NJISA/Department’s policies, priorities, procedures, and clinical protocols in collaboration with the Director/Chair, Vice Chair, Co-Director, Director of Administration, and Clinical Practice Manager.
  8. Identifies/investigates barriers related to the development and implementation of the Institute/Department’s inter-professional programming to train the healthcare workforce in geriatrics and inter-professional collaborative practice. Formulates and implements recommendations for improvement as directed by leadership.
  9. Develops funding strategies in collaboration with the Chair and Director of Administration to contribute to support of the clinical, education, and research mission of NJISA and the Department.
  10. Participates in internal and external funding opportunities, including education/training, clinical, and research grant applications, progress reports, abstracts and papers, and oversees project implementation as directed.
  11. Participates in advocacy initiatives and activities at the national and local levels, as directed.
  12. Stays abreast of current policies, programs, trends, and developments in the fields relevant to the NJISA/Department’s mission, goals, and programming and disseminates/communicates them to leadership, faculty and staff, as appropriate.
  13. Plans, executes, directs and oversees the execution of special projects as directed.
  14. Provides clinical teaching, preceptorship, and mentorship to students, residents, faculty, and staff to support geriatrics and inter-professional education and collaborative practice, as directed by the Chair, working to the full scope of his/her professional license and in compliance with institutional protocols and guidelines.

Education: 

Licensed health care professional with a doctoral or other advanced degree with at least 8 years clinical experience in in-patient, out-patient and long term care settings. Experience in geriatrics and knowledge of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders (ADRD),  and resources and services for patients, families, and caregivers required. Must possess strong writing, communication, and leadership skills. Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint required. Experience in curriculum development, grant writing, grant-reporting, and age-related research preferred. Proven research capabilities, including database creation, management, and analysis (SPSS, SAS), and experience using EMR (i.e., Epic) preferred.

 Experience, Skills and Knowledge:

  • Experience in aging/geriatrics, including program planning, development, administration, and management
  • Knowledgeable about geriatrics best practices, the 4Ms Age-Friendly Health System, and dementia-friendly care, Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders
  • Excellent leadership skills, with demonstrated ability to constitute inter-professional teams, motivate and delegate
  • Experience in grant-writing, securing extramural funding, preparation of project budgets, budget justifications
  • Experience preparing IRB applications to support research interests and related projects involving human subjects and IRB review
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in clinical geriatrics and gerontology, including a broad range of cross-cutting skills across the continuum of geriatric care, inter-professional team-based education, collaborative practice, and working as part of a team
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience providing training/education on Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders, mild cognitive impairment, and where to obtain resources to upgrade teaching content
  • Knowledgeable about the aging services network, Managed Long-Term Services and Supports, Administration on Community Living
  • Successful history of building linkages and collaborations with academic institutions, leaders in aging, aging-related organizations, and other community, faith-based and human service organizations
  • Strong oral, written communication and teaching/presentation skills
  • Demonstrates initiative, ability to problem-solve, balance multiple priorities, and work independently
  • Demonstrated experience in precepting/mentoring students, staff, faculty, and community-based partners in aging and grant-related service, education, and research projects
