Director of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS)

Become part of Rowan University’s continued growth as an International University. The Director of International Student and Scholar Services supports the mission of the International Center and the goal of comprehensive campus internationalization by working closely with and reporting to the Associate Provost for International Education and the entire campus community. 

This is a leadership opportunity that oversees many important aspects of the International Center such as:

  • Performing PDSO (Primary Designated School Official) functions and serving as the main point of contact for issues related to SEVIS and SEVP.
  • Ensuring that 1500 international students and scholars are integrated into campus life and culture in many ways including participation in international student activities and events.
  • Applying a deep knowledge and understanding of the federal regulations related to immigration matters to develop policies and procedures related to international student and scholar services.

Primary responsibilities are:

International Student and Scholar Services

  • Oversees international student and scholar support services, which includes F-1 students and J-1 students and scholars.
  • Oversees students with other non-immigrant visa types (i.e. H, L, F-2, J-2, A, R, etc.).
  • Interpret and incorporate regulatory changes into internal policies and procedures to ensure consistency in advising practices across ISSS team.
  • Provides in-depth immigration advising services to international students, foreign visiting scholars, Rowan faculty and staff.
  • Advises students and scholars on working in the US, applying for driver’s license, applying for SSN, transferring to a new school or taking leave of absence and providing supporting letters as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison between the International Center and campus student and support services, such as Housing, Advising, Admissions, Student Affairs, Wellness Center, Bursar, and Registrar.
  • Serves as Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) and Responsible Officer (RO).
  • Ensures International Student and Scholar Service data is accurate, complete and up-to-date including web pages, Banner and Terra Dotta.

SEVIS Duties

  • Prepares and submits materials necessary for SEVIS Recertification for F-1 visa program and SEVIS redesignation and annual report for J-1 program.
  • Maintains active SEVIS users’ records and verifies their information when necessary.
  • Tracks and certifies students’ full-time enrollment and oversees students’ SEVIS registrations every semester.
  • Submit student and program data correction requests to SEVP or SEVIS help desk when necessary.
  • Collaborates with International Admissions team to ensure timely issuance of I-20 and DS-2019 documents.

Orientations, Activities & Workshops

  • Coordinates international student orientations and move-in days for incoming international students.
  • Provides direction for extracurricular and social event for international community.
  • Plans and implements F-1 and J-1 visa related presentations, information sessions, and workshops for international students and scholar..

Management/Leadership

  • Supervises ISSS staff and student workers.
  • Ensures effectiveness and efficiency of human resources in ISSS.
  • Ensures accuracy of timesheets of the ISSS staff and approves them biweekly.
  • Supervises International Center including the English Language Program (ELP) staff when the Associate Provost is not available.

Other Administrative Duties

  • Builds a budget for ISSS, student orientation, and extracurricular activities.
  • Generates international student & scholar reports that include enrollment and participation statistics per semester.
  • Support Associate Provost’s international initiatives.
  • Represent the unit at events, meetings, conferences, and fairs on and off campus when needed. 

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in administration, education, international education, higher education administration or a related area required.
  • Five years of experience working with immigration regulations in a university setting including significant experience as Designated School Official and/or Alternate Responsible Officer and progressively more responsible management experience; and demonstrated leadership, human relations and effective communication skills required.
  • Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position’s description.
