Position:  Professional Service Specialist 2 - AFT (FT Temporary)

The Advanced Materials & Manufacturing Institute (AMMI) at Rowan University seeks a qualified, competent, professional, and service-oriented specialist to meet the technical engineering needs of our Advanced Cold Spray Facility and its associated research and project endeavors.

The candidate must have experience in working with engineers and scientists, creative project development and management skills, and excellent communication skills.  The successful candidate will have the ability to work independently as well as in a team environment, must be capable of multi-tasking on challenging, yet rewarding, problems in a fast-paced environment, and must be available to work in a flexible schedule that may include some evening hours.  Experience in academic settings, particularly in an advanced technology laboratory, is preferred.

The staff engineer works closely with all AMMI personnel, including students, faculty, and staff.  Their duties, directly associated with AMMI’s Advanced Cold Spray Facility, are to:

  • Develop techniques to facilitate the manufacture, characterization, and automation of cold spray and adjacent processes and implement such techniques;

  • Define engineering requirements for new research initiatives;

  • Develop user manuals, SOP’s, and related necessary documentation for the developed equipment and systems;

  • Train new users on existing and developed cold spray related technologies;

  • Perform necessary maintenance and repairs on electrical and mechanical parts, equipment, and systems;

  • Establish and conduct preventive maintenance of all parts, equipment, and systems;

  • Maintain laboratory inventory, including chemicals and consumables inventories;

  • Manage, facilitate, and conduct research and contract work;

  • Have a working expertise with a wide range of fabrication technologies and maintain currency with state-of-the-art technology and software;

  • Assist AMMI affiliated faculty and students in technical writing activities;

  • Assist AMMI leadership in events, marketing and branding activities;

  • Work closely with Rowan’s Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) and other University technicians to maintain laboratory safety and compliance;

  • Assist AMMI’s administrative staff with purchasing supplies and equipment;

  • Acquire a breadth of knowledge related to university policies and procedures;

  • Coordinate with all stakeholders, such as manufacturers, sponsors, partners, and research team members to ensure that all tasks are met; and

  • Contribute to other duties as assigned and agreed upon.

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

 

  • Education: Graduation from an accredited college with a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field

  • Experience: 3 years of professional experience

 

Required:

 

  • Experience in the design, development, manufacture, use, modification, and maintenance of advanced technology laboratory equipment, including, but not limited to, additive manufacturing equipment, mechanical testing machines, optical microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, high-resolution high-speed videography equipment and associated staging equipment, and machining equipment and tools

  • Extensive knowledge of cold spray additive manufacturing technology

  • Experience in designing, manufacturing, and assembling cold spray equipment and adjacent processes

 

Preferred:

 

  • Working knowledge of CAD and CAM programs

  • Working knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)
