The Opportunity

We're looking for a legal professional (JD or LLM) to take on a pivotal role handling our intellectual property portfolio and supporting technology commercialization. This is an opportunity to work directly with brilliant researchers, help protect cutting-edge innovations, and gain hands-on experience across the full spectrum of IP law.

You'll be part of a collaborative team that bridges the gap between laboratory discoveries and market-ready technologies. From AI and biotech to clean energy and advanced materials, you'll work with innovations that could change the world.

What You'll Do

Build Your IP Expertise

  • Manage patent prosecution from initial invention disclosures through filing and beyond
  • Work with external patent counsel on complex cases while developing your own skills
  • Conduct patentability searches and freedom-to-operate analyses
  • Learn international patent systems including PCT and EPO processes

 

Drive Technology Transfer

  • Partner with our AVP Innovation to negotiate licensing deals that bring research to market
  • Draft and review agreements including licenses, MTAs, and CDAs
  • Help researchers understand the commercial potential of their work
  • Build relationships with industry partners and potential licensees

 

Enhance Your Legal Expertise

  • Handle patent portfolio management and compliance
  • Support IP litigation and enforcement strategies with experienced external counsel
  • Navigate federal research regulations like the Bayh-Dole Act
  • Develop expertise in emerging technology areas and their unique IP challenges

Make an Impact

  • Educate faculty and researchers on IP strategy and commercialization opportunities
  • Help shape institutional IP policies and procedures
  • Stay at the forefront of technology trends and IP law developments

What We're Looking For

Required Background

  • JD or LLM degree
  • Admission to New Jersey bar and USPTO registration as Patent Attorney
  • 3-5 years of patent prosecution, litigation, or IP legal experience
  • Basic experience with technology transfer or licensing (we'll help you grow from here)

  • Strong communication skills and genuine interest in working with researchers
  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects while maintaining quality
  • University or research institution experience
  • Exposure to IP litigation or post-grant proceedings

This position offers the rare opportunity to gain broad experience across all areas of IP law while working with some of the most innovative research happening today. You'll develop skills in patent prosecution, licensing negotiations, portfolio management, and strategic IP planning - all while receiving mentorship and support from experienced colleagues.  This role reports to the AVP of Innovation and interacts heavily with the University’s General Counsel’s Office and VP or Research.

You'll also build valuable relationships across academia and industry, positioning yourself for long-term career growth in technology transfer, IP law, or innovation management.

Salary & Benefits:

  • In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $120,000. When extending any salary offer, Rowan University considers many factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, work experience, education, training, key skills, internal equity, as well as market and other organizational considerations.
  • For eligible employees, benefits include: comprehensive NJ State health, dental and retirement benefits, extensive accrued time off/paid holidays, and tuition reimbursement for employee, spouse, and dependents to attend Rowan University, Glassboro.
