Assistant Director—Writer

Department of University Communication

Division of Marketing and Communication

Rowan University is seeking a talented and experienced assistant director of University Communication to join its Division of Marketing & Communication. This role is ideal for a strategic communicator with a passion for storytelling who can elevate the university’s reputation through compelling content and media outreach.

The assistant director will:

  • Promote the University through proactive media relations, including developing story ideas, writing news releases, and pitching to regional, national, and international media outlets.

  • Collaborate directly with deans, faculty, researchers, students, and executive leadership to identify and communicate impactful stories.

  • Coordinate the promotion of research activities across all academic disciplines.

  • Utilize multimedia storytelling platforms—such as social media, blogs, and video—to highlight events, initiatives, and institutional priorities.

  • Write advertising copy for targeted campaigns and broad-based branding efforts.

  • Draft speeches and executive communications for the University’s leadership team.

  • Participate in the University’s emergency response communication efforts.

  • Engage actively in the campus community by serving on committees and attending events.

  • Manage projects involving freelance writers and design professionals.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across the Division of Marketing & Communication and with communicators throughout the University.

  • Contribute to Rowan Magazine, other institutional publications and websites through assigned features and departmental content.

  • Report to the vice president for University Communication and perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills across formats, including press releases, newsletters, web content, social media, reports, speeches and advertising copy.

  • Minimum of five years of professional writing experience.

  • Master’s degree.

  • Proficiency in AP style.

  • Availability for occasional night and weekend work, both indoors and outdoors, as well as occasional travel.

  • Submission of three to five published writing samples. Finalists may be asked for additional samples and will complete a writing assignment.

Preferred:

  • Experience in journalism and/or media relations.

  • Experience in video content creation and photography.

  • Demonstrated expertise with major social media platforms.

Salary & Benefits:

In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is AFT: Range 24 $73,899.91 to $84,980.25 with placement within the range determined by candidate's qualifications, professional experience, internal equity, and other factors.

For eligible employees, benefits include: comprehensive NJ State health, dental and retirement benefits, extensive accrued time off/paid holidays, and tuition reimbursement for employee, spouse, and dependents to attend Rowan University, Glassboro. (Tuition reimbursement will apply to undergraduate degrees only for spouse and dependents).”
