Rowan University, a public institution and statewide leader in online education, invites applications for the role of Associate Director of Online Educational Strategies. This key leadership position reports to the Associate Vice President of Online Learning within the Online Learning Department in the Rowan Online Division. The role is responsible for guiding instructional design strategies for online program offerings, promoting pedagogical excellence, and ensuring a consistent, high-quality student experience across online programs.

The Associate Director must have a student-first approach as they lead strategic initiatives to support online course and program development and collaborate closely with academic units, SMEs, and cross-functional partners. This role also oversees the standards, resources, and processes that shape Rowan’s online educational strategies—building a culture of innovation, quality, and inclusive learning. The ideal candidate will possess a comprehensive understanding of instructional design in higher education, and will work collaboratively with various teams to continually improve online learning. Goals for this position include on-time delivery of high quality online course curricular maps and instructional plans, successful management of subject matter experts (SMEs) assigned to develop course maps, and establishment of processes that ensure quality instructional design practices are integrated into all of Rowan’s online programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership:
    • Lead the adoption of modern online learning design models (e.g., UDL, backward design, experiential and active learning, gamification, AI-enhanced instruction).
    • Ensure alignment of course and program design with institutional quality standards and learning outcomes.
    • Foster a collaborative team environment that encourages innovation, knowledge sharing, and the adoption of best practices in instructional design.
    • Stay current with national trends in online learning and educational technology in an effort to bring innovation and competitiveness to Rowan Online’s operations.

  • Program and Course Planning:
    • Collaborate with Rowan Online leadership and academic stakeholders to guide instructional design within the program planning process.
    • Represent Rowan Online when collaborating with external stakeholders and leadership, including SMEs, Academic Program Coordinators, Deans, and other academic stakeholders.
    • Manage the online course proposal process, ensuring compliance and facilitating review and approval.
    • Align goals, objectives, and assessments across programs and courses in partnership with academic stakeholders.
    • Work with internal teams to uphold course and program quality and consistency.

  • Quality Assurance & Data-Informed Practice
    • Leverage course feedback, analytics, and design reviews to drive improvements and inform training.
    • Drive project success through the use of project management tools and management methodologies.
    • Support quality and consistency across online offerings through periodic evaluation and design review.

  • SME Development & Support:
    • Provide training and mentorship to Online Learning staff and leadership on program and course design best practices.
    • Serve as a consultative partner to academic coordinators and SMEs throughout the development process.
    • Contribute to the development of training resources for SMEs.

  • Documentation and Resource Management:
    • Maintain clear, accessible documentation related to Online Educational Strategies for diverse audiences.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Education, Instructional Design, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in instructional design and online learning, including team leadership or project management responsibilities.
  • Proven experience in online program development and instructional design, with a strong understanding of learning theories and instructional design models.
  • Strong understanding of instructional design models, learning theories, and online teaching best practices.
  • Proven experience managing instructional design projects, from concept through to completion.
  • Experience with common educational technologies used for online courses in academic settings, including the Canvas Learning Management System (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated success leading or supporting complex course development initiatives in higher education.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.

Salary:

In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $97,000 to $123,000. When extending any salary offer, Rowan University considers many factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, work experience, education, training, key skills, internal equity, as well as market and other organizational considerations.
