Position: Professional Service Specialist III (PSS3)

Department: Chemistry and Biochemistry

Building: Science Hall (and/or Discovery Hall)

 

Description: The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks a well-trained and skilled laboratory technician to prepare and assist the laboratory portion of the courses offered in the department. The successful candidate will be able to perform the following duties and possess the qualifications listed below.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate laboratory procedures and schedules for service courses with emphasis and primary responsibilities in organic and/or general chemistry curriculum

  • Coordinate with departmental chemical hygiene officer to determine lab and chemical safety requirements for laboratory experiments, including hazardous compound storage, usage, and disposal.

  • Oversee laboratory exercise scheduling for optimal usage and efficiency

  • Develop course scheduling plans in conjunction with the department chair/head for optimal laboratory resource utilization

  • Maintain department protocols for laboratory exercises and reagents

  • Prepare reagents, standards, and solutions as needed to run lab experiments

  • Set up equipment required for laboratory experiments in chemistry courses

  • Maintain inventories of reagents, supplies, and essential files

  • Assist faculty in developing new laboratory experiments and help improve existing ones

  • Learn about the current operation of any new equipment that is acquired for running the laboratory experiments.

  • Supervise or train any undergraduate/graduate student workers/learning/teaching assistants assigned to the laboratory courses.

  • Provide cross-departmental laboratory support when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • A minimum bachelor's degree in chemistry or related fields is required. MS in chemistry or related fields is preferred.

  • Ability to prepare and organize laboratory and demonstration materials

  • Strong ability to set priorities on an initiative

  • Ability to work in a team environment

  • Strong computer skill set

  • Good knowledge of general subject matter

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Ability to work a highly flexible schedule including nights or weekends

  • Ability to solve problems creatively in an evolving environment


Level: AFT Professional Services Specialist III (Range 21)

This is a fully on-campus position that requires in person work hours on the main (Glassboro) campus.

The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026.

Salary & Benefits:

  • In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is AFT: Range 21 ($63,833 to $73,416), with placement within the range determined by candidate's qualifications, professional experience, internal equity, and other factors. 

        For internal applicants, salary is determined per the Pay Adjustment formula (NJAC 4A:3-4.9 & 4.10).

  • For eligible employees, benefits include: comprehensive NJ State health, dental and retirement benefits, extensive accrued time off/paid holidays, and tuition reimbursement for employee, spouse, and dependents to attend Rowan University, Glassboro. (Tuition reimbursement will apply to undergraduate degrees only for spouse and dependents).
