Veterinarian, Primary Care - Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine of Rowan University

Work type: Regular Full-Time
Location: Glassboro, New Jersey
Categories: School of Veterinary Medicine

Position Summary:

The Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine (SSVM) at Rowan University invites applications for an experienced Primary Care Veterinarian to join our growing Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital at a truly formative moment.

This position offers a rare opportunity for a clinically driven veterinarian to help build, define, and grow a modern academic primary care service from the ground up—while remaining deeply engaged in patient care, team culture, and clinical excellence. The successful candidate will play a critical role in shaping clinical standards, workflows, and service identity as the Primary Care Service expands alongside specialty and emergency services throughout the hospital.

This role is ideal for a veterinarian who:

  • Thrives in hands‑on clinical practice
  • Thinks thoughtfully about the full spectrum of care
  • Values collaboration, communication, and continuity
  • Is energized by growth, change, and building new systems

The initial focus of this position is clinical service and program development. As SSVM’s DVM program matures, this role will evolve to include clinical teaching, with anticipated student involvement beginning in approximately two years. Academic experience is welcome but not required—clinical strength, adaptability, and initiative are the priorities.

Primary Care at SSVM:

Primary Care is a cornerstone of the SSVM hospital vision to create “day one ready” veterinarians. The service is designed to:

  • Deliver high‑quality, relationship‑based veterinary care
  • Serve as a robust clinical teaching environment for students
  • Collaborate closely with specialty and emergency clinicians
  • Respect and actively partner with primary care veterinarians in the community
  • Help define what academic primary care looks like at a new veterinary school
  • Influence culture, standards, and systems from the beginning
  • Maintain meaningful clinical practice while preparing for clinical teaching
  • Be part of a collaborative, mission‑driven hospital community

The Primary Care team is currently refining SOPs, training frameworks, and workflows while scaling services in a startup academic hospital. Faculty joining at this stage will have a meaningful voice in shaping how the service evolves.

The service is housed within the SSVM teaching hospital.  The teaching hospital is designed to support collaborative, multidisciplinary care and currently includes specialty services such as diagnostic imaging (radiology, ultrasound, GE CT, and 3T MRI), dentistry and oral surgery, primary care,  ophthalmology, cardiology, and emergency and critical care, with anesthesia, internal medicine, oncology, dermatology, and surgery to follow.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide excellent primary care across the spectrum of care, including preventative medicine, diagnostics, chronic disease management, and client communication
  • Perform routine soft‑tissue surgery and dentistry with confidence
  • Collaborate with specialty and emergency services to deliver integrated patient care
  • Contribute to the development of Primary Care Service protocols, SOPs, and training processes
  • Participate in service growth, workflow design, and team development
  • Prepare for future clinical teaching and mentorship of veterinary students
  • Engage in clinical scholarship or research activity aligned with individual interests

Required Qualifications:

  • DVM or equivalent degree
  • Minimum of five (5) years of primary care clinical experience
  • Eligible for licensure in New Jersey
  • Strong general practice skill set, including surgery and dentistry
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Flexible, adaptable, and motivated to grow within an evolving clinical service

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in spectrum of care medicine
  • Interest in or pursuit of ABVP certification
  • Curiosity about clinical research or scholarly activity
  • Prior academic, teaching, or mentorship experience
  • Desire to help build systems and culture in a startup environment

Salary & Benefit Details:

In accordance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the anticipated salary range for this position is $110,000–$150,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, and track. Final salary will be determined at the time of offer.

Faculty at Rowan University are represented by the AAUP Union and receive a comprehensive benefits package in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and State of New Jersey benefits programs. Benefits typically include:

  • Health, prescription, and dental coverage through the State of New Jersey
  • Participation in state retirement plans, including pension options
  • Generous paid time off and paid holidays
  • Faculty governance participation and union representation
  • Professional development and continuing education support
  • Tuition benefits for eligible employees and dependents
  • Eligibility for the federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program

Details regarding benefits are governed by applicable collective bargaining agreements and university policies.

Academic Appointment:

This is an open‑rank faculty position (Instructor through Full Professor), clinical or tenure track, based on qualifications and professional goals. Rank and track will be determined at the time of appointment.
