Position Summary

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive veterinary ophthalmology services within the SSVM Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital while contributing to clinical teaching, student mentorship, and continued service excellence.

The Ophthalmology Service is actively seeing patients and has established clinical workflows, referral relationships, and hospital support systems. The successful candidate will join a functioning specialty service with the opportunity to contribute to continued growth, expanded clinical capabilities, and educational excellence.

SSVM recognizes that exceptional faculty bring diverse career goals and practice models. As the DVM program matures, this position will include increasing opportunities for structured clinical teaching and supervision, with anticipated student involvement throughout the clinical curriculum. Previous academic experience is welcome but not required. We are seeking a collaborative ophthalmologist with excellent clinical skills, strong communication abilities, and enthusiasm for mentoring the next generation of veterinarians.

Ophthalmology at SSVM

The Ophthalmology Service provides advanced diagnostic and therapeutic care for companion animal patients while supporting SSVM's mission to develop confident, practice-ready veterinarians.

The service is designed to:

  • Deliver compassionate, evidence-based ophthalmic care
  • Provide advanced diagnostic evaluation and treatment of ocular disease
  • Collaborate closely with primary care and specialty clinicians
  • Support referring veterinarians throughout the region
  • Provide outstanding clinical learning experiences for students and trainees
  • Advance clinical scholarship and innovation in veterinary ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Service is supported by:

  • Dedicated ophthalmology equipment and clinical support
  • Advanced diagnostic imaging capabilities
  • Multidisciplinary specialty consultation
  • Anesthesia and pain management support
  • On-site pharmacy services
  • Clinical pathology support

The successful candidate will join an established service and have opportunities to contribute to continued clinical growth, educational programming, and advancement of ophthalmology within an innovative academic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive ophthalmology consultation and treatment for companion animal patients
  • Perform advanced ophthalmic diagnostics and procedures
  • Collaborate with primary care and specialty clinicians to provide integrated patient care
  • Support communication and relationships with referring veterinarians
  • Participate in clinical teaching and mentorship of veterinary students, interns, residents, and veterinary technology students
  • Contribute to ophthalmology curriculum development and clinical skills training
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and service development
  • Engage in scholarly activity or clinical research consistent with individual interests
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive hospital culture

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree
  • Completion of an ophthalmology training program
  • Board certification or board eligibility through the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) or equivalent
  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in New Jersey
  • Demonstrated expertise in companion animal ophthalmology
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary specialty hospital
  • Strong interest in clinical teaching and mentorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching, mentoring, or academic experience
  • Interest in veterinary ophthalmology education
  • Interest in clinical research or scholarly activity
  • Experience developing clinical protocols or quality improvement initiatives
  • Interest in advancing academic specialty practice within a collaborative environment

Salary and Benefits

In accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act, the anticipated salary range for this position is $150,000–$200,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, appointment track, and appointment percentage. Final salary will be determined at the time of offer.

Faculty at Rowan University are represented by the AAUP and receive a comprehensive benefits package in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and State of New Jersey benefit programs. Benefits eligibility is based on appointment percentage and applicable University policies.

Academic Appointment

This is an open-rank faculty appointment (Instructor through Full Professor) available on either the Clinical Track or Tenure Track, depending on qualifications, experience, and professional goals.

Both full-time and part-time appointments will be considered. Faculty rank, appointment track, responsibilities, and effort allocation will be determined at the time of appointment based on the successful candidate's qualifications, career interests, and the needs of the School.

Residency Requirements

Rowan University is subject to the residency requirements of the NJ First Act (N.J.S.A. 52:14-7, P.L. 2011, Chapter 70). Any person hired to a non-exempt position shall either have their principal residence in New Jersey or have one (1) year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person hired to an exempt position shall either have their principal residence in New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, or New York or have ninety (90) days from the date of employment to establish, then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, or New York.

Note on STEM-OPT Employment
