Position Summary

The successful candidate will provide advanced small animal surgical care while contributing to the continued development of a modern academic referral surgery service. Initial responsibilities will focus on clinical service development, caseload growth, hospital collaboration, and strengthening relationships with regional referring veterinarians.

SSVM recognizes that exceptional faculty bring diverse career goals and practice models. As our DVM program matures, this position will naturally evolve to include structured clinical teaching and supervision, with anticipated student participation beginning in approximately two years. Previous academic experience is welcome but not required. We are seeking collaborative surgeons with outstanding technical skills, excellent communication, and enthusiasm for helping build an exceptional academic surgery service.

Small Animal Surgery at SSVM

The Small Animal Surgery Service is central to SSVM's mission of providing exceptional specialty care while preparing graduates to confidently manage surgical patients within collaborative healthcare teams.

Our service is designed to:

  • Deliver exceptional referral-based surgical care
  • Provide advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgery
  • Collaborate closely with Primary Care, Urgent Care, and specialty clinicians
  • Strengthen partnerships with referring veterinarians throughout the region

  • Advance clinical innovation, scholarship, and evidence-based surgical practice

The Surgery Service is supported by a modern Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital featuring advanced diagnostic and surgical resources, including:

  • Dedicated surgical suites
  • Advanced anesthesia and pain management
  • GE 3 Tesla MRI
  • 128-slice CT scanner
  • Digital radiography
  • Ultrasonography
  • Clinical pathology laboratory
  • On-site pharmacy
  • Comprehensive specialty consultation

Faculty joining now will help establish surgical protocols, referral pathways, educational experiences, and service standards that will define the Surgery Service for years to come.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced soft tissue and orthopedic surgical care for companion animal patients
  • Perform elective and emergency surgical procedures
  • Collaborate with Primary Care, Urgent Care, and specialty clinicians to provide comprehensive patient care
  • Build relationships with regional referring veterinarians
  • Develop clinical protocols, quality improvement initiatives, and workflow processes
  • Participate in development of the surgical curriculum and pre-clinical educational experiences
  • Prepare for future clinical teaching and mentorship of veterinary students
  • Engage in scholarly activity and collaborative clinical research
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative and supportive hospital culture

Required Qualifications

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree
  • Board certification or board eligibility through the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) or equivalent
  • Eligibility for veterinary licensure in New Jersey
  • Demonstrated expertise in companion animal soft tissue and orthopedic surgery
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary specialty hospital
  • Adaptability, initiative, and enthusiasm for helping build a growing academic surgery service

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching, mentoring, or academic experience
  • Interest in surgical education and curriculum development
  • Interest in clinical research or scholarly activity
  • Experience developing surgical protocols or quality improvement initiatives
  • Interest in advancing academic referral surgery within a collaborative environment

Salary and Benefits

In accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act, the anticipated salary range for this position is $150,000–$290,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, appointment track, and appointment percentage. Final salary will be determined at the time of offer.

Faculty at Rowan University are represented by the AAUP and receive a comprehensive benefits package in accordance with collective bargaining agreements and State of New Jersey benefit programs. Benefits eligibility is based on appointment percentage and applicable University policies.

Academic Appointment

This is an open-rank faculty appointment (Instructor through Full Professor) available on either the Clinical Track or Tenure Track, depending on qualifications, experience, and professional goals.

Both full-time and part-time appointments will be considered. Faculty rank, appointment track, responsibilities, and effort allocation will be determined at the time of appointment based on the successful candidate's qualifications, career interests, and the needs of the School.

Residency Requirements

Rowan University is subject to the residency requirements of the NJ First Act (N.J.S.A. 52:14-7, P.L. 2011, Chapter 70). Any person hired to a non-exempt position shall either have their principal residence in New Jersey or have one (1) year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey. Any person hired to an exempt position shall either have their principal residence in New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, or New York or have ninety (90) days from the date of employment to establish, then maintain, principal residence in the State of New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, or New York.

Note on STEM-OPT Employment

The report also contains information about fire statistics in Rowan University on-campus student housing facilities and crime statistics for the three previous calendar years, including reported crimes that occurred on-campus; in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University; and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from the campus.
