Assistant Vice President for Technology Commercialization and Industry Development

The Assistant Vice President of Innovation & Commercialization Engagement will manage and encourage technology transfer activities and intellectual property issues for the university. This will include educating the campus community regarding relevant intellectual property and technology transfer issues, including developing and interpreting policy and representing university’s interest in intellectual property and commercialization to external organizations.  This position reports to the Vice President for Research.

The successful candidate will interact with university investigators regarding their research, inventions and the commercialization process. Proficiency in the following areas is required:

  • Assessing the technical and commercial potential of disclosed inventions
  • Developing and implementing strategies to successfully market and license inventions
  • Identifying possible industrial partners capable and interested in commercializing technologies via market research and network of contacts
  • Composing marketing materials, such as non-confidential one-page summaries, posting and updating these materials as patent applications are published and more data is generated
  • Conducting due diligence on potential licensees, including review of business and marketing plans for viability
  • Drafting and negotiating a variety of agreements and/or clauses including licenses, materials transfer, confidentiality, option and inter-institutional agreements
  • Enhancing and educating the campus community about innovation/commercialization through lectures, workshops, events and other mechanisms
  • Working with outside counsel in preparation, filing and prosecution of patent applications including timely response to office actions
  • Developing and revising policies and procedures related to intellectual property as needed
  • Advising and guiding faculty/staff/students in seeking resources such as NSF I-Corps, PFIs, etc. for innovation/commercialization initiatives
  • Maintaining records effectively and efficiently for accurate reporting
  • Coordinating with Offices of Research and Sponsored Programs as necessary
  • Supervising employees

General Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree or JD preferred
  • Minimum 5 years related experience in technology transfer and commercialization required

Additional Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of federal regulations related to intellectual property
  • Experience with transfer of technologies to start-up companies, including university spin-outs
  • Ability to prioritize, exercise sound judgment and discretion, meet deadlines and work under pressure in a fast-paced environment is essential
