SUMMARY:

The Certified Medical Assistant plays an important role in the comprehensive care of pediatric patients in an outpatient setting. This position involves both clinical and clerical responsibilities to support physicians and advanced practice clinicians. The incumbent is expected to interact with children, adolescents, and families in a compassionate and professional manner while adhering to the established policies and guidelines of the CARES Institute and supporting the mission of the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine, Virtua Health College of Medicine and Life Sciences at Rowan University.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clerical

  • Supports retrieval of records and referrals, providing necessary medical records to providers.
  • Triages messages and offers patient and family support within the scope of training and pediatric triage experience.
  • Routes calls to appropriate personnel and ensures urgent matters are promptly addressed by appropriate clinical / administrative team members.
  • Coordinates prescription requests from patients / families and maintains accurate documentation in patient charts.
  • Maintains an orderly filing system and organizes patient charts to ensure current and accurate information.
  • Scans patient information into electronic records.
  • Maintains inventory of medical office supplies.

Clinical Care

  • Prepares patients for visits by confirming appointments.
  • Rooms patients and families and takes age- and clinically appropriate vital signs, including length, height, weight, head circumference, blood pressure, pulse, pulse oximetry, and temperature, based on orders, practice, and policy.
  • Performs screening and diagnostic tests per standing orders, including point of care testing of blood / urine / swabs.
  • Performs age-appropriate vision and hearing screening.
  • Prepares specimens for transport to the laboratory and documents test results appropriately in the medical record.
  • Assists medical providers with direct patient care and chaperoning when necessary.
  • Clean and prepare exam rooms before and after each patient’s use.
  • Ensures external medical records are available for provider review.
  • Documents clinical information accurately.
  • Administers vaccines per medical providers’ orders, adhering to pediatric vaccination schedules and guidelines.
  • Administers oral medications per medical providers’ orders.
  • Participates in the Vaccine for Children Program and the New Jersey Immunization Information System (NJIIS), accurately documenting vaccine information in NJIIS and other relevant records.
  • Assist with inventory management of state-issued vaccines and maintains vaccine storage temperature logs.
  • Assists the vaccine coordinators with ordering vaccines.
  • Stocks exam rooms, maintains clinical stock inventory and notifies supervisors of clinical supply needs.
  • Maintains and cleans office medical equipment.

Other duties

  • Attends mandatory in-service training and maintains competence in office computer systems.
  • Upholds University policies regarding HIPAA and confidentiality.
  • Assists with the orientation and training of new employees.
  • Adheres to compliance standards, university code of conduct and conflict of interest policies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from a post-secondary medical assisting education program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Current certification from a recognized certifying body, for example, the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT), or any recognized certifying body approved by the Board.
  • Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. Must have attained a satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.
  • At least one (1) year of related experience in a medical office setting preferred.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques preferred.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Effective communication, organizational, and flexibility skills.
  • Knowledge of pediatric vaccines, administration techniques, and triage protocols.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to stand and sit for extended periods.
  • Proficiency in handling medical supplies and equipment.
  • Effective communication skills in diverse circumstances.

SALARY:

Minimum is $19.10/hour, Probationary Rate. After completion of a six-month probationary period, employee's pay will increase to the "Job Rate". Depending on experience, candidate may be hired at the "Job Rate" to start.
