System Administrator (PSS4)

Rowan University is seeking an experienced, adaptable System Administrator to join our Enterprise System Administration group. In this position, you will be responsible for supporting the enterprise systems as well as faculty and researchers at Rowan University. Reporting to the Director of Enterprise System Administration, you will be a member of the team that supports the enterprise server infrastructure and our cloud environment.

What you get to do:

  • Ensure day-to-day effective systems operations; including patches, upgrades, routine automation, security, troubleshooting, and technical support for all users.
  • Support physical and virtual servers including racking, installing operating systems (ESXi, Windows Linux), and maintenance. Maintenance can include patching, installing software, supporting customers with their systems, and security configurations.
  • Develop and implement various integrations between diverse infrastructure services to improve efficiency, functionality, and effectiveness.
  • Participate in the design, implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of various infrastructure services at the University.
  • Collaborating with researchers to architect and estimate computational equipment requirements.
  • Optimizing the enforcement of security configurations and standards for research equipment and laboratories.
  • Providing support in troubleshooting research systems and software issues.
  • Providing day-to-day technology support for researchers intended to meet their unique needs.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation.


We are looking for people who have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline or 4 years equivalent work experience.
  • The ability to balance long-term projects and strategic initiatives with short-term emergent requests.
  • Experience coding web applications and command line scripts in Python.
  • Experience integrating with external APIs.
  • Experience working in a Linux command-line environment.
  • Experience working with Docker and other containerized environments.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills.
  • Commitment to customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to set goals and achieve them.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to support a 24x7 environment.

Nice to have:

  • Prior System Administration experience
  • Certifications related to operating systems (Windows or Linux), server hardware, or enterprise storage systems.
  • Experience supporting Research Environments
  • Hands on experience managing Linux and Windows desktops and servers
  • Experience working in a production data center environment
  • Experience working with and supporting HPE servers and storage.
  • Experience working with one (or more) of the following areas:
    ○ Single Sign-On (CAS, Shibboleth, etc.)
    ○ Load Balancers (NetScaler, F5, etc.)
    ○ LDAP (Active Directory, FreeIPA, etc.)
    ○ Hypervisors (ESXi, XenServer, etc.)
    ○ DNS (Infoblox, AD DNS, etc.)
    ○ SQL (MySQL, Oracle, SQL Server, etc.)
  • Working knowledge of Source Control Management (SCM)
  • Working knowledge of XML and JSON data structures.
