SUMMARY

We are seeking a skilled Certified Medical Assistant to join our team! The successful candidate will be responsible for administering care management for the Department of Geriatrics, coordinating activities for patients, and providing direct patient care for our Providers who are on and off campus. This is a key role in supporting the Practice Supervisor and Clinical Team to deliver high-quality patient care.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES.

  • Contributes to the achievement of excellence in health care to fulfill the mission of the Department.
  • Exhibits strong customer service skills in daily interaction with the public, patients, staff and physicians in the performance of job duties.
  • Provides patient care according to Department policies and procedures as well as with the plan of care.
  • Checks patients in through EPIC/EMR system; verifies demographics and insurance information and makes any corrections or additions; copies patient’s insurance card; collects appropriate copays; retrieves referrals and prior authorizations for appropriate visits.
  • Schedules patient appointments for office visits through EPIC/EMR system.
  • Batches patients' visit activity and prepares payments for deposits. Prepares deposit and closes batches.
  • Verifies patient insurance benefits, referrals, and precertification (if needed) for services to be provided.
  • Assists providers with patient care and administrative tasks.
  • Draws up medications or uses prefilled medication for injections given by provider/clinical staff.
  • Manages medication refills, referral, and prior authorization work queues.
  • Manage medication refills, assist with department medical trials/new program ventures.
  • Handles/triages patient calls. Routes urgent/critical messages to provider via EPIC/Phone/Email communication.
  • Prepares patient letters as requested.
  • Communicates with and responds to the Department's various staff, offices, and nursing facilities.
  • Covers other clinical operations as requested.
  • Prepares patient charts for next day visits.
  • Maintains safety, medical waste, sample medication, prescription, and refrigerator logs and keeps abreast of current regulations.
  • Prepares exam room for patient visits and cleans after patient check out.
  • Completes insurance HMO referrals (paper and/or electronic).
  • Scans into EPIC/EMR all appropriate patient-related correspondence and information.
  • Maintains stock/discarded sample medications.
  • Maintains office and medical supply inventory to ensure that they are up to code with appropriate expiration dates documented and visible.
  • Stocks exam rooms and keeps exam rooms’ neat and orderly on a weekly basis.
  • Orders injectables, vaccines, and office supplies.
  • Maintains a professional, hygienic, and orderly office appearance.
  • Communicates with the Department’s various staff and offices.
  • Opens and closes offices.
  • Maintains and cleans office medical equipment daily.
  • Distributes mail to appropriate recipient.
  • Assists Practice Supervisor in oversight of all workflows to ensure office efficiency.
  • Provides patient education regarding self-management.
  • Notifies provider of all abnormal test results and follows up with patient as directed by physician.
  • Participates in planning and evaluation of patient care by communicating all information pertinent to the patient's status.
  • Works with Practice Supervisor specific to quality measures/outcomes to close care gaps.
  • Assists with managing workflows related to various aspects of patient care including: referrals to specialists, ancillary testing, ER visits, and hospitalizations.
  • Assists Practice Supervisor with development of educational resources for patients and staff.
  • Serves as an on-site trainer for CMA staff members.
  • Serves as liaison between consulting physicians, and other frequently used healthcare resources and the patient and/or family.
  • Serves as a back-up for the Practice Supervisor as needed specific to core duties and responsibilities.
  • Is knowledgeable of and initiates emergency procedures.
  • Assists with maintenance of supplies and equipment, to ensure orderliness of the examination and treatment rooms.
  • Participates in department's Performance Improvement activities.
  • Performs clinical duties of a Certified Medical Assistant.
  • Assists Practice Supervisor with all site visits.
  • Maintains competence as EPIC super user for both the clinical and front desk applications.
  • Assists the Practice Supervisor with the HRO-evaluation checklist and annual evaluations for all CMA and Front desk staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Understands and adheres to legacy Rowan SOM compliance standards as they appear in the Corporate Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Blood Sugar (normal range vs abnormal range)
  • Blood pressure (normal range vs abnormal range)
  • Ekg’s
  • Vaccine administration
  • Visual Eye Examination
  • Vitals (Temp, height, weight, pulse rate and pulse ox)
  • TB Injections and readings (under the guise of the Provider on site)
  • Phlebotomy
  • Triage phone calls (sick vs non sick)

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Certification from an accredited medical assistant program is required.  Knowledge of computers is required. Applicants must be able to take temperatures, pulse, blood pressures, and other simple procedures where indicated. Minimum of three years of experience as a CMA in a primary care practice is required. A working knowledge of medical terminology in a medical office preferred. Must have EMR experience, EPIC preferred. Must have the ability to work independently, excellent communication skills, organizational skills, work flexibility and driving to other satellite offices and facilities is required. Knowledge of examinations, diagnostic and treatment procedures. Proficient in clinical quality assurance, ability to use good judgment, employ critical thinking skills, and the ability to identify and resolve problems. Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and protocols. Ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.

SALARY: 

Minimum is $23.20/hour, Probationary rate applies after successful completion of a 180-day probationary period at which time employee's pay will increase to the "Job Rate". Depending on experience, candidate may be hired at the "Job Rate" to start whereby, probationary rate will NOT apply.
