Summary/Position Description:

The Division of Real Estate and Capital Projects at Rowan University is a growing enterprise. The Division’s mission is to create and sustain a vibrant, safe, supportive environment at Rowan’s campuses. The Division is dedicated to providing leadership in campus planning, design, and development. Organizationally, the Division is led by the Vice President for Real Estate Development and Capital Projects/Executive Director SJTP who is a member of the President’s executive cabinet.

The Director of Landscape Architectural Services is a part of Real Estate and Capital Projects Division.  Through collaboration and partnership with the rest of the Real Estate and Capital Projects Division as well as  Division of Facilities and Operations and campus community, this Department leads the overall management of Capital Projects for the University including but not limited to the Glassboro Campus, the Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine (Rowan-VirtuaSOM), the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), the Joint Health Science Building, and Camden Academic Bank Building in Camden, the West Campus including the South Jersey Tech Park (SJTP), School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Nursing School.

Under the supervision of the AVP Strategic Projects and University Architect, the Director of Landscape Architectural Services manages and provides expertise in the planning and design of new site and landscape projects, as well as renovations, from pre-construction to installation.  Further, this role collaborates and coordinates with Grounds Operations and other stakeholders on landscape design, landscape management, and site protection as it impacts the aesthetics and function of outdoor space. The Director of Landscape Architectural Services is a team member who helps ensure Rowan’s campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable while supporting teaching, learning, research, health and wellness, and community engagement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Collaboration

  • Provide leadership and advocate for best practices in site and landscape planning, design, installation, maintenance, and monitoring
  • Serve as project liaison, department representative, and subject matter expert providing direction on campus landscape and open space related matters, including capital projects, maintenance projects, and staff and student initiatives; coordinate work with other departments
  • Respond to landscape and site related inquiries from outside the department; liaise with student groups, faculty, and staff on outdoor space initiatives and concerns
  • Formulate ongoing working relationships and partnerships with the Director of Facilities and grounds staff to correlate design with maintenance capacity; keep abreast of and disseminate information on contemporary landscape theory, particularly as related to sustainability and resilience
  • Advance the capability and professionalism of the division and department

Planning and Design

  • Participate in planning for the exterior environment of Rowan’s campuses; collaborate on defining goals and expectations for outdoor space
  • Provide technical assistance and support to Project Managers in the Department of Design and Construction and others
  • Manage the planning and design of a wide range of projects with differing scales and complexity, from small renovations to new construction for landscape and site work projects; as required, develop concepts, plans, and specifications for small-scale improvement projects
  • Ensure that open space initiatives follow the principles and guidelines in the Glassboro Campus Stormwater Management and Landscape Master Plan and the Glassboro Campus Master Plan and always include their ongoing maintenance and management practices as an integral part of project development
  • Collaborate with Grounds on key landscape installations and other overlapping interests
  • Represent landscape interests on the Design Standards Committee and the Sustainability Committee
  • Represent Facilities on the University’s arboretum leadership team
  • Coordinate with Operations on the inventory and assessment of campus furnishings and hardscape
  • Coordinate with University Advancement and Grounds on memorial gifts in the landscape
  • Creatively identify maintenance and development projects impacting the exterior environment to formulate opportunities for funding and study.

Project Management

  • Prepare RFQs/RFPs for consultant services
  • Assist with selection of design consultants and construction teams and the execution of contracts
  • Review design and construction documents, reports, opinions of probable cost, project schedules, and other deliverables produced by consultant teams
  • Monitor projects to ensure compliance with contractual plans, specifications, and budget parameters
  • Oversee services performed by outside contractors, such as landscape contractors and arborists
  • Facilitate the state-sponsored art inclusion program, from artist selection to installation, including promotion and campus engagement
  • Manage project budgets and discretionary budget for site and landscape projects
  • Identify, draft, complete and manage grant opportunities to advance the exterior environment at Rowan University in a sustainable manner

Sustainability

  • Promote and support the University’s statement on sustainability by planning, designing, and constructing capital projects and physical improvements using sustainable principles, such as those established by the U. S. Green Building Council, and following guidelines, such as those set forth by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, and similar organizations.

Perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Requirements:

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture; advanced degree preferred

Licensure/Certification

  • Professional Landscape Architect (PLA) license required
  • SITES accreditation through the United States Green Building Council (SITES AP) preferred
  • Certification through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA Certified Arborist) a plus

Experience

  • Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in landscape and site planning, design, construction, and management including demonstrated team management and assignments with documented budget responsibility. At least three (3) years in the performance and supervision of tasks at an institution of higher learning or similar.
  • Experience in planning and design, project cost estimating, bidding and coordination of landscape architectural design documents through all phases of projects.
  • Experience with landscape maintenance and management and collaborating with crews on site.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of landscape theory and practice from concept design through management
  • Knowledge of public landscapes, including horticulture, green infrastructure, and sustainable site design
  • Knowledge of building codes, site accessibility requirements, industry standards, zoning codes, and municipal permitting processes for site construction projects in the state of New Jersey
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite, Adobe suite, Bluebeam, AutoCAD and GIS; familiarity with eBuilder and 3-D graphics software a plus
  • Ability to develop and coordinate graphics for presentations
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Comfort, confidence, and capability in working with people, both inside and outside the university, and in representing the university appropriately in all aspects of the role 
  • Ability and willingness to support and collaborate with others toward improvement of the campus environment and culture
  • Ability to set priorities, attend to multiple projects, and work independently to meet objectives
  • Possess management skills, including decision-making and problem-solving
  • Ability to pivot quickly in a fast-paced environment, while maintaining organization and attention to detail
  • Strong design leadership abilities and adept in leading design teams toward successful results

Salary & Benefits:

  • In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $118,000. When extending any salary offer, Rowan University considers many factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, work experience, education, training, key skills, internal equity, as well as market and other organizational considerations.
