ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.

  1. Takes the lead in work involved in the maintenance of institutional grounds.
  2. Prepares soil and seeds, rolls, cuts, weeds, waters, and rims lawns.
  3. Sprays, prunes, and trims orchards and shrubs.
  4. Removes dirt, rubbish, snow, leaves and other refuse and assists in the maintenance of roads, lawns, sheds, benches, and parking areas.
  5. Removal of snow and the operations of snow blowers and salt spreaders.
  6. Sees that the non-cultivated areas are properly maintained. 
  7. Sees that equipment, materials and supplies including tractors, grass cutters, scythes, hoes, rakes, sprinklers, garden house, cultivators, spades, sheers, spraying devices, fertilizers, seeders and other garden and grounds keeping equipment and tools are used properly.
  8. Reports unusual occurrences and significant conditions in the building and on the grounds, and takes those steps required to ensure safe and orderly conditions.
  9. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office or related units.
  10. This position is essential and requires you to report as needed in emergencies including weather related emergencies.
  11. Works with other trades in all areas inside and outside as needed.

This is a part time position 25 Hours per week

REQUIREMENTS:

Experience: One (1) year of experience in the performance of painting, repairs and maintenance.

License: Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New Jersey.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:  

Knowledge of methods used to plan, lay out and perform lawn and grounds maintenance work.  Ability to take the lead in the work involved in laying out flowerbeds and directing preparation of soil, planting of seeds, weeding and thinning of bedding stock, and production of flowers for cutting purposes.  Ability to perform the tasks necessary for the propagation of trees, shrubbery, perennial plants, and to direct the pruning of trees and shrubs, weeding, mowing of lawns, and trimming of hedges.  Ability to properly use equipment, materials, tools, and supplies.  Inmates in their proper ability to requisition, safeguard, store equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.   Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.   Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recordings and information systems use the agency, office, or related units.  All outside rounds duties including painting, repairs and maintenance.  Assist in all other trades as need and other related duties.  Ability to red, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of the position.  American Sign Language or Braille may be considered as acceptable forms of communications.  Persons with mental or physical disabilities are eligible, as long as they can perform the essential functions of the job after reasonable accommodations is made to their known limitations.  If the accommodations cannot be made because it would cause the employer undue hardship, such persons may not be eligible.  Indoor and outdoor painting.  Basical mechanical maintenance to assist higher level mechanics.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  This position requires the individual to stand, walk, use hands to handle or feel, to reach with hands and arms, to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, to talk or hear and taste or smell over 2/3 of the time; to climb or balance up 2/3 of the time and less than 1/3 of the time to sit.  The position requires lifting more than 100 pounds under 1/3 of the time but up to 25 pounds 2/3 of the time and up to 100 pounds 1/3 of the time.   There are no special vision requirements because all apply.  The individual must possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The position requires that the individual work in wet or humid conditions.

(Non-weather), in high precarious places and under extreme heat (non-weather) up to 2/3 of the time.  The individual will work near moving mechanical parts, be subjected to fumes or airborne particles, deal with toxic or caustic chemicals, risk electrical shock, or vibrations over 2/3 of the time.  Work is done under outdoor weather conditions or extreme cold (non-weather) less than 2/3 of the time.  There is little or no risk of radiation.  Exposure to blood borne pathogens that requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment which is provided under 1/3 of the time. Loud noise to very loud noise is typical of this environment over 2/3 of the time.  An annual physical exam and hearing test are provided for this position.

Salary

  • In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the hourly salary range for this position is $23.27-$24.60 per hour, with placement within the range determined by candidate's qualifications, professional experience, internal equity, and other factors.
