Rowan-Virtua SOM has established a Department of Medical Education and Scholarship to enhance the quality of undergraduate medical education, and future health professions programs. This department will centralize faculty with critical teaching roles in multiple educational programs, focusing on the School’s educational mission. Faculty without clinical duties, including basic scientists, physicians, and other instructors, will be a part of this department. The goal is to increase the visibility of quality teaching, enable integration of disciplines, and foster research collaborations and funding opportunities across campuses. This department will also showcase medical education to the broader community, attract collaborations, and secure various funding sources.
Given the need for an evidence-based approach to teaching and assessment, faculty with expertise in instruction, curriculum development, educational research, and evaluation are crucial. The role involves addressing the increased demand for educational accountability and navigating the complexities imposed by accreditation agencies.
Overall, the Chair will oversee a cohort of medical educators, promote educational excellence, and report to the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs & Student Services.
Responsibilities:
The inaugural Chair will:
- Strategic Planning and Goal Setting:
- Assess needs, define priorities, and propose educational goals on short- and long-term bases for the Department of Medical Education, and the SOM programs that it serves.
- Plan and administer the unit's budget.
- Manage budget expectations, and present departmental recruitment requests.
- Promote and implement the strategic directions established by the Curriculum Committee of the School of Osteopathic Medicine and its educational programs
- Faculty Development and Mentorship:
- Lead recruitment of faculty
- Assign and supervise faculty to educational duties
- Coordinate with the Director of Faculty Development to ensure appropriate faculty in educational development and support their interests by mentoring and guiding their teaching efforts.
- Mentor faculty towards professional goals, and academic advancement as well as those with performance difficulties.
- Educational Program Development:
- Create an internal departmental structure to best meet the educational needs of SOM and its programs
- Collaborate with deans of Academic Affairs and Student Services, and clinical departments to foster an integrated teaching program for SOM.
- Develop and maintain information systems for reporting performance and educational program evaluation data for planning and assessment purposes.
- Quality Assurance and Evaluation:
- Prepare reports on educational involvement and effectiveness for departmental faculty annual evaluations.
- Prepare written or oral reports needed for planning, development, and/or evaluation of educational programs.
- Research and Scholarship:
- Encourage faculty to conduct educational research and publish the results.
- Foster potential research collaborations and funding opportunities across campuses.
- Community Engagement and Visibility:
- Showcase medical education to the community at large, and to outside agencies and funding sources, to further collaborations and attract donors.
- Increase the visibility of quality teaching within Rowan University.
- Accreditation and Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards and processes in medical education.
- Address challenges presented by accreditation agencies and maintain high standards of accountability in education.
- Administrative Duties:
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs & Student Services.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate for this position will possess a terminal degree such as a DO, MD, PhD, EdD, or equivalent. They should have a minimum of 5 years of experience in medical education, with demonstrated experience in curriculum development, instructional design, and educational assessment. Demonstrated excellence with course or clerkship direction is essential. This leader must be emotionally intelligent with a demonstrated commitment to Diversity Equity and Inclusion.
Experience in a leadership role within an academic or educational setting and a track record of published scholarly work are essential. The candidate must exhibit strong leadership and organizational skills, excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, and proficiency in data management and educational technology. They should be adept at working collaboratively across departments and disciplines and possess expertise in mentoring and faculty development.
Knowledge of accreditation standards and processes in medical education is also required. The successful candidate will be committed to fostering a culture of educational excellence, able to inspire and motivate faculty and staff, and demonstrate an innovative and forward-thinking approach to medical education. Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities are crucial attributes for this role.
In compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is:
Rank of Associate Professor or Professor: ($ 136,000 to $ 197,000) *
*Placement within the range is determined by the candidate's qualifications, professional experience, and other factors. For clinical faculty positions, additional compensation is paid through supplemental funding based on regional benchmarking standards and internal equity by specialty.
