Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Student Success and Inclusion Programs, the Assistant Director/Counselor for EOF Transfer/STEM will work with EOF students and assist in the coordination of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation in STEM (LSAMP) Program, The STEM Academy at Rowan (STAR), and ASCEND/EOF Transfer student program, which includes the coordination of academic enrichment services such as success coaching, academic success workshops, and individualized tutoring support geared at improving student retention and academic success for Transfer students. This team-member will maintain a high level of efficiency as it relates to recruiting, screening, matching, and monitoring the relationships between success coaches and ASCEND students. The Assistant Director/Counselor will also serve as a counselor, working one-on-one with ASCEND students to help them develop core academic success skills and monitoring the academic and social transition of EOF transfer students.  The Assistant Director/ASCEND Counselor will also assist in the coordination of ASCEND STEM initiatives and serve as co-chair of the Underrepresented Students in STEM Taskforce.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides regular intrusive academic, financial, personal, and career counseling to Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP), STEM and ASCEND transfer caseload.
  • Assists in the review and admission of potential EOF transfer applicants.
  • Monitors caseload of student retention/graduation rates, including attendance and participation in academic and support programs (i.e. ASCEND counseling, Success Coaching, and Tutoring), and communication of feedback from early alert systems.
  • Develops individual success plans for caseload through coordination of university resources and community services.
  • Maintains appropriate professional confidentiality and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population.
  • Maintains written and electronic counseling reports in student folders regarding student progress.
  • Maintains working knowledge of all types of financial aid available to student, and the rules and regulations governing them.
  • Assists with the coordination of ASCEND academic programming from the pre-college institute throughout the academic year. Develops and implements innovative academic success workshops across campus and residence halls.
  • Resides in residence hall during the six-week pre-college institute.
  • Works collaboratively to coordinates academic support to ASCEND students’ year-round and during the day and evening through ASCEND’s success coaching program, the STEM Academy at Rowan (STAR), and individualized tutorial support to improve student retention.
  • Coordinates and implement an academic probationary student support system.
  • Collaborates with various campus tutoring resources (i.e. Tutoring Center, Math Lab, Writing Center, Reading Department, Academic Reboot) to help students develop and implement individualized academic success plans.
  • Assigns and monitors students and their relationship with assigned academic coaches.
  • Develops and implements a process by which students will identify their individual learning style and learning strategies that correspond with their style.
  • Develops and implements a process by which students will access academic support services such as course-specific tutoring, academic advising, disability services, and counseling services.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise STEM peer coaches who serve as mentors/tutors to STAR program students throughout the academic year.
  • Plans site visits and trips to academic conferences to enhance students’ interest in the STEM fields and demonstrate potential career paths.
  • Assists in the development of innovative programs to support and retain ASCEND students.
  • Coordinates and facilitates monthly signature events, designed to foster faculty and student interaction outside the classroom.
  • Support student academic success by effectively matching students with a STEM Peer coach.
  • Fosters and maintains relationships with faculty, staff and collaborators within various STEM related majors, departments, and colleges at Rowan and beyond.
  • Conducts ongoing assessment and reporting on programmatic and student learning outcomes and impact of academic support services.
  • Assists with marketing and advertising of program workshops, trainings, events, and activities.
  • Coordinates success coaching for pre-college institute (summer program).
  • Serves as liaison between the summer bridge staff and the University Academic Advisors in coordination of first semester freshmen year course registration.
  • Participates in orientations and activities related to the Rowan University transfer process.
  • Available to work flexible schedule with some domestic travel, evenings and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Required:

  • Master’s in education, Psychology, Sociology, Student Personnel Services, Counseling in Higher Education, or other related field.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience, preferably in higher education student support services.
  • Experience working with EOF students, STEM programming and supporting underrepresented STEM students in higher education.
  • Self-motivated and detailed oriented, ability to multi-task, and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to effectively interact with diverse student populations and maintain confidentiality while working cooperatively with others to meet their needs.
  • Ability to work some extended evenings and weekends, especially in the summer.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working with undergraduate students in higher education setting.
  • Experience with grant writing and reporting.
  • Experience supporting grant development and management or working with grant funded programs preferred.
  • Experience with providing tutoring or academic support services to undergraduate students.
  • Knowledge, experience, sensitivity, and awareness of the needs of diverse student populations including under-represented students, students with disabilities, students of color and student veterans.
  • Knowledge of best practices for time management, organization and study strategies.
  • Supervisory experience.

  • General understanding of financial aid, opportunity programs, and higher education.

Skills and Abilities:

Technology: Working knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point, email, discipline related software, and internet.

Language Skills: Ability to communicate effectively and interact tactfully with all levels of the college staff, students, and trustees; read, analyze, and interpret documents, budgets and contracts; and respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.

Reasoning Skills: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
