The Assistive Technology Specialist works directly with students who have disabilities (physical, learning, mental health, etc.) especially print/reading disabilities -- and who use, or want to learn more about assistive technology (AT), such as computer screen readers, dictation software, alternate format texts, classroom aids and other technology solutions. In addition to direct student contact, this position collaborates with Information Technology (IT). Responsibilities also include, reviewing documentation and requests for accommodations and rendering opinions on appropriate accommodations especially when related to AT requests. The AT specialist will also assist in outreach to potential and current students and their families about the disability accommodation process and provide guidance on the appropriate use of accommodations. This position reports to the director of the Disability Services and will serve as an interactive member of the team, including assisting with other department responsibilities and tasks as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage Alternate Format Text accommodation program. Work proactively to promote an awareness and understanding of compliance matters and trends in current and potential accessibility issues and solutions. This includes collaborative work with the Information Technology (IT) staff to evaluate and implement AT solutions at the University (on & off campus).
  • Work directly with students to determine their current skill level/knowledge of assistive technology options; determine student's needs (hardware, software, equipment, training); provide appropriate training to students/staff/faculty when needed or determine other resources and solutions.
  • Remain abreast of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 best practices and emerging technologies. Maintain, promote, support, update and develop a plan for targeted expansion of the Assistive Technology catalog, department website, work with the Director to anticipate budgeting needs for AT solutions and other office functions -- errands, communicating information about department and accommodations.
  • Assist in review of student requests for AT and other technology related accommodations, including needs of students participating in on-line courses and field placements. This includes training other staff/faculty/field supervisors in AT, Universal Design for Learning when needed and appropriate.
  • Assist in development, design, and management of content of the Disability Services department website using Cascade CMS
  • Assist in the development and implementation of  innovative and creative integrated academic support programs for all students including those students with disabilities, utilizing available resources for delivery to Rowan students and expanding electronic resources when possible.
  • Organize and oversee inventory and security of equipment, including computers and adaptive technology for use by students with disabilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree desired in information technology, education, a human services field, or other closely related field.
  • At least one year’s experience preferred working with various types of educational technology.
  • At least one year’s experience preferred in accurately converting course material to alternate formats for students with learning, visual, or other print disabilities, with strict attention to detail.
  • Experience working with adaptive technologies that facilitate access to electronic information and educational programs for students with various disabilities, such as Kurzweil, JAWS, Dragon Naturally Speaking, and ZoomText.
  • Experience preferred with student disability services at the postsecondary level.
  • Experience preferred with sources of alternate media such as the AccessText Network, Learning Ally, and Bookshare.  
  • Experience preferred in evaluating assistive or adaptive technology needs of an individual and communicating results of that evaluation.

This information is required by federal law, Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act or "Clery Act" and is provided by the Rowan University Department of Public Safety.
