Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) Library, located in Camden, NJ seeks creative and dynamic candidates for the position of multimedia specialist. This primary responsibility of this position is to provide consultation, training and design support for scientific research posters, presentations and publications; and to provide overall multimedia assistance to support scholarship and instruction at CMSRU and Cooper University Hospital.  Working as both part of the library team and independently to promote their services, seek out opportunities for collaboration, and manage multiple curricular, conference, and publications deadlines is an expectation of this position.

The library plays a central role in supporting the academic, research, and clinical enterprises of Cooper University Hospital and CMSRU, as well as its individual students, residents, faculty members, and staff. The library works closely with Campbell Library at Rowan University and RowanSOM Health Sciences Library colleagues on services and collections.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated the ability to work in a complex, changing environment; a proven capacity to work effectively in teams and building partnerships; and will be committed to providing service to the University, the community, and the profession.

This full-time AFT-Professional position will report to the director of the CMSRU Library.

Position Summary:

Primary responsibilities of the Multimedia Specialist are as follows:

  • Conduct individual consultations and training sessions on content and design for faculty, staff, students, and nurses for scientific posters, presentations, and publications.
    • Educate users in best practices for scientific communications
    • Assist in identifying images, illustrations, and videos from library resources; incorporate design and copyright knowledge, including fair use is scientific communications
    • Provide data visualization services in the use of appropriate graphs, charts, figures, and infographics
    • Assist with poster printing specifications; including conference-specific size and layout requirement
  • Support all phases of education at CMSRU and Cooper University Hospital.
    • Assist faculty and clinical nurse educators in updating and revising multimedia in course materials by assisting with graphically enhancing lectures. Assist with incorporating graphics, photos, multimedia, video, web design, tutorials, and other learning media in course lectures/sessions.
    • Assist in identifying images, illustrations, and videos from library resources for use in instruction
    • Work with faculty subject matter experts to develop engaging online e-learning videos
    • Assist faculty with technology tools for instruction
  • Provide support for CMSRU Student Pipeline Programs
    • Develop, update, and present workshops on scientific poster design best practices for multiple phases of student Premedical Urban Summer Enrichment Program (PULSE) and MedAcademy programs.
    • Provide small group consultations and feedback on group posters
    • Support programs’ poster symposiums, highlighting student research projects
  • Develop online tutorials and webinars in collaboration with CMSRU Librarians
    • Collaborate on creating videos, tutorials, and webinars by providing software support
    • Edit videos and webinars for posting on appropriate platform(s)
    • Provide expertise in a wide variety of audio, video, and screencasting software
    • Stay current in latest trends in educational multimedia technologies, and in future applications of 3D printing
  • Service
    • Serve on Rowan University Libraries, CMSRU, or University-wide committees
    • Participate in campus community by attending workshops, advising CMSRU student organizations, or participating in CMSRU/campus events
    • Propose solutions for improving programs that involve scientific posters, presentations & publications, and data visualization
    • Participate in professional development/membership in professional organization(s)

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a field related to communications, health sciences education, research support, or visual data design

Required Experience:

  • Three (3) years of professional experience required (preferably as a visual designer, with experience in scientific data visualization, illustration, and multimedia applications). 
  • Experience in training and instruction in the above areas.
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to work in a fast-paced environment, both independently and collegially, as part of the library team.
  • Ability to meet varying deadlines for conference poster and publication submissions.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to convey conceptual ideas such as design details and rationale, both verbally and visually
  • Strong organization and project management skills
  • Evidence of a strong customer service commitment in a user-centered environment.
  • Flexibility and willingness to take on additional responsibilities as the needs of the library grow.
  • Strong interest in, and enthusiasm for, continual self-learning through exploring new tools, techniques and technology

Preferred Experience:

  • 5 years of experience preferred, as a visual designer, with experience in scientific data visualization, illustration, and multimedia applications.
  • Experience leading and mentoring individuals in their professional development.
  • Experience with 3D printing.
