Rowan University is a Carnegie-ranked doctoral institution with high research activity with approximately 19,000 students. Its main campus is located in Glassboro, N.J., 20-miles southeast of Philadelphia, and it has a branch campus and medical school in Camden and a second medical school in nearby Stratford. Rowan is the second university in the country to offer M.D. and D.O. medical-degree granting programs. The University boasts seven colleges–William G. Rohrer College of Business, Henry M. Rowan College of Engineering and colleges of Communication and Creative Arts, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, Performing Arts, and Science and Mathematics, as well as the School of Biomedical Science and Health Professions and Earth and the Environment. The College of Education has over 2500 undergraduate and graduate students and is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).

The Rowan University Early Childhood Demonstration Center is a NAEYC accredited and NJ licensed early learning center serving children ages 3-6. Through hands-on, play-based learning and emergent projects, the ECDC provides children of the Rowan and surrounding communities a unique opportunity to grow and thrive on a college campus.  The preschool partners with academic programs throughout the University to provide specialized learning experiences for children as well as experiential learning for university students.

Reporting to the ECDC Director, the Preschool Teacher will focus primarily on the coordination and facilitation of learning experiences for a mixed-age group of children.  During the academic year, this age range is 3s, 4s, and 5s, but during our Summer Camp program, the ECDC accepts children who are 6 as well.  The preschool teacher will have knowledge of child development, developmentally appropriate practices for young children, as well as state and national guidelines and standards for child care centers.   

Primary Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Plans a balanced curriculum which aims to develop pupils physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially
  • Utilize play-based and emergent curriculum approaches to plan and facilitate engaging and meaningful learning experiences and projects based on child development and interest that support state and national early learning standards 
  • Establish and implement a daily routine in accordance with best practices that includes time for independent, small and large group learning opportunities, motor development opportunities, and health and nutritional development
  • Create and maintain a safe and nurturing environment that promotes learning, inquiry, and discovery and which values diversity, inclusion, tolerance, and acceptance through anti-bias education
  • Document child progress in daily observations, anecdotal records, child folios, and screenings
  • Provides individualized instruction and remedial techniques when the needs of the pupils dictate and differentiates pupils’ instruction according to their abilities
  • Communicate regularly with families while creating positive interpersonal relationships
  • Participate in professional development including courses, seminars and workshops, and staff meetings and remain current with developments in the field and maintain the highest level of professional competence
  • Communicate and work cooperatively with diverse instructional support staff, families, student teacher candidates, and university faculty and outside and coordinates recommendations of the speech therapist, physical therapist, and other professional members of the interdisciplinary committee with the educational prescription for each child
  • Promote positive behaviors among children utilizing proactive and positive approaches to classroom management
  • Continually update knowledge of and implement indicators of program quality
  • Collect records pertaining to the classroom, including daily attendance
  • Maintain a professional atmosphere in the classroom and the school community
  • Assist the Director in implementing, maintaining, and documenting the standards of GROW NJ KIDS and NAEYC
  • Perform other related duties as required 

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning
  • P-3 Teaching Certificate
  • One (1) year of teaching experience in a school, preschool or child care for young children
  • Experience with emergent/inquiry based curriculum such as the Project Approach, Bank Street  Reggio Emilia Approaches
  • Knowledge of early education in NJ, educational standards, and NAEYC accreditation
  • Understands and values racial equity as an organizational operating principle and is committed to continued learning on issues related to race, equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Proven problem-solving, decision-making, and program coordination skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills and detail-oriented
  • Ability to multitask effectively and efficiently
  • Skills in using multiple forms of technology and digital programs
Requirements:
Education:

Possession of a valid New Jersey Teacher's Certificate (Standard, Emergency or Provisional Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing or Certificate of Eligibility) or Permanent Endorsement, issued by the Board of Examiners of the New Jersey Department of Education, authorizing instruction in subject areas appropriate to the teaching assignment, as determined by the head of a school or district Note: Teacher 2 is utilized to teach differing student populations and different content areas; therefore, the specific teaching certificate may vary Note: A valid Orientation and Mobility Instructor Certificate, issued by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Specialists or the National Blindness Certification Board, may be substituted for the educational requirement listed above, within the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired Note: Emergency Certification may be issued only in the fields of teacher of the blind and partially sighted and teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing. Provisional Certification is a temporary one-year certificate issued in disciplines other than those appropriate for Emergency Certification, as previously defined Special Note: Ability to physically lift, move, and position students License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position

Notes:

  • Caring for young children includes certain physical, mental, and sensory demands.  Candidates for this position should be able and prepared to lift small children, sit on the floor or child-sized furniture, actively engage in gross motor play, assist children with toileting and other hygienic functions, and work in an environment that may be noisy and busy.
