Accessibility Specialist 

Professional Services Specialist 2 (AFT Range 24)

Department: Accessibility Services, University College

Position Summary: Reporting to the Senior Director of Accessibility Services and ADA Coordinator, the Accessibility Specialist supports the expanding population of students with disabilities to ensure equitable access to a high-quality Rowan education, including intake and registration for students seeking accommodations, implementation of department programming and initiatives including Orientations and College Compass, and implementation of students’ accommodations in conjunction with faculty and co-curricular Departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct support to students with disabilities.
  • Assist with development, delivery, promotion, and assessment of Accessibility Services programs, services, and events.
  • Assist with academic coaching of neurodivergent students and alumni participating in the Autism PATH program.
  • Assist with collaborations involving the Center for Neurodiversity and other University partners.
  • Support students with navigating the Accessibility Information Management (AIM) system and assistive technology options; determine students’ needs (hardware, software, equipment, training); provide appropriate training to students/staff/faculty when needed or determine other resources and solutions.
  • Support the expansion of Assistive Technology (AT), including anticipating budgeting needs, reviewing student requests, and training staff/faculty/field supervisors in AT and Universal Design for Learning, and maintain inventory and security of equipment
  • Assist in managing the Alternate Format Text accommodation program. 
  • Work proactively to promote an awareness and understanding of compliance matters and trends in current and potential accessibility issues and solutions. 
  • Assist in the development of innovative integrated academic support programs for students including those with disabilities.
  • Assist with maintaining and updating AIM online database including Classroom/Housing Accommodations and priority registration.
  • Assist with College Compass and Welcome Week programming specific to new first-year and transfer students with disabilities.
  • Maintain a knowledge of University College Departments and academic resources.
  • Assist in promoting resources and services via multiple communication channels including website, social media, direct messaging, and workshops.  
  • Remain abreast of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 best practices and emerging technologies.
  • Requires occasional evening and weekend work. 
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • This is an in-person position; may be eligible for one remote day per week, depending on Departmental needs. 

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related field and three years of relevant experience working in an education setting or with students with disabilities. 
  • Education and/or experience regarding ADA and supporting students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with diverse student populations including minoritized students, students with disabilities, and military-affiliated students.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, organization skills, and strong work ethic. 
  • Excellent leadership, communication, organizational, interpersonal, and analytic skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; independently apply policies and make decisions; meet deadlines; perform multiple tasks at one time; keep information confidential, and to learn and implement detailed procedures.
  • Skilled with Microsoft Office/Google suite programs and ability to learn new technologies quickly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, faculty, and staff with excellent customer service, accuracy, and professionalism.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Professional experience in an Accessibility Services office or related setting.
